Sometimes, the Outlook client may stop showing the sender’s name in the inbox. This issue can occur while searching for an email or looking through the messages, as reported by the users in the Microsoft community forum.

As from last week when you search in Outlook 2016 you no longer see the person’s name in the emails you are searching. Now it just lists the emails with that persons name included in the email rather than showing if the email was ‘from that person’ or ‘to that person’.

How do I fix the Outlook sender name error?

1. Check the View settings

  1. Open Outlook and click View on the menu bar.
  2. Select Change View and select Compact or Preview.

2. Check Service Health Dashboard

  1. Open the Microsoft Office portal admin center.
  2. Open the Service Status and check if the issue is posted to the dashboard.
  3. If the issue is posted, Microsoft will release a fix or resolve the issue.

3. Open Outlook in clean view mode

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run.
  2. Type outlook.exe or cleanview and hit Enter.
    • Outlook will reset the default view.
    • It also deletes any custom views you have created.
  3. Close and relaunch the Outlook client and check for any improvements.

3.1 Open Outlook in Safe Mode

  1. Press and hold the Ctrl key.
  2. Click on the Outlook client to launch the app.
  3. Click Yes when a window appears asking if you want to start the application in Safe Mode.
  4. Open the inbox and check if the sender’s name is visible.
  5. If Outlook is showing the sender’s name, it is most likely that a third-party app is causing the problem.
  6. Restart the Outlook client in normal mode.

  7. Disable all the third-party add-ins that you have installed. To do this, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
  8. Relaunch and check if the issue persists.
  9. If the issue is resolved, find the add-on that is causing the problem by enabling them one by one.

4. Run Office repair tool

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run.
  2. Type control and click OK to open the Control Panel.
  3. Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
  4. Select your Microsoft Office program from the list of the installed programs.
  5. Click on the Change option. Click Yes when prompted by the UAC.

  3. Under Product Information, click on Update Options.
  4. If the updates are disabled, click on Enable Updates.
  5. Click again on Update Options and select Update Now.
  6. Outlook will download and install available updates.
  7. Relaunch the Outlook client and check for any improvements.
