Windows 11 Update KB5074109 Linked to App Crashes and Lockups
Microsoft released KB5074109 for Windows 11 recently, but the update continues to cause serious issues. Users already reported Azure Virtual Desktop failures and shutdown problems, and although Microsoft pushed emergency updates, new bugs keep appearing.
Reports point to full system lockups after the KB5074109 update
As reported by Neowin, new complaints describe complete system freezes and repeated app crashes after installing KB5074109. One user, SPMech, experienced a total system lockup when changing viewport shading modes in BforArtists, a fork of Blender.
The PC stops responding entirely, with no blue screen, error code, or visible crash report. Standard recovery options fail once the freeze occurs.
Reinstalling both the affected application and the Windows update did not solve the issue. The freezes stopped only after uninstalling KB5074109 and pausing Windows Update. At the time of writing, Microsoft has not acknowledged this specific problem publicly.
Because the entire system locks up, the problem likely involves drivers or the Windows graphics stack rather than a single app. This explanation matches earlier reports linking KB5074109 to black screen issues on systems running NVIDIA GPUs.
In a separate case, another user named Eva Kwon reported that payroll and remote-access applications close immediately after login once KB5074109 is installed. These crashes occur consistently and prevent normal system use.
Overall, KB5074109 continues to frustrate Windows 11 users. The update has already caused reboot loops, broken POP email accounts, and made Outlook unusable for some users. Until Microsoft delivers a broader fix, uninstalling or pausing the update remains the safest option for affected systems.
