During the Ignite 2022 Conference, Microsoft announced that it will be rebranding Office 365 to Microsoft 365. This cuts across the Office app on Windows, mobile, and the web. And it now seems that the company is well on its way to better positioning itself for the future.
According to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Microsoft announced that it has commenced rolling out the Microsoft 365 app for the web. The company has further indicated that the rollout will be done in phases, therefore, it will be available to customers gradually in the coming weeks.
According to Microsoft:
The Microsoft 365 app enables you to create, share, and collaborate all in one place. You can create new content using a wide variety of apps and templates, access your files and apps, and leverage the intelligence of Microsoft Graph to deliver insights and recommendations for making work easier. The app also integrates third-party apps and storage solutions you’ve purchased.
Some of the changes that customers can look out for with this feature tagged 98173 include a new URL, a new visual style, and a new favicon which is similar to the new Microsoft 365 icon. This is on top of a couple of new features that Microsoft plans on launching in the few weeks to come.
- Feed: a new page that uses intelligence from Microsoft Graph to surface relevant content based on who you work with and what you do.
- Tagging: a new feature that helps you organize content with custom “tags”, regardless of where the content is stored. Tagging is done on an individual basis and is not seen by others across the organization.
- A new Apps module: a more robust experience that connects you to your Microsoft 365 apps, including third-party apps integrated with Microsoft 365.
The feature is expected to hit broad availability by late November 2022. Another notable change to look out for in January is that “links across Microsoft websites pointing to www.office.com will be updated to point to www.microsoft365.com”. Later on, whenever users click on www.office.com they will be redirected to www.microsoft365.com. That said, if you use strict firewall protections, you’ll need to add the domain to your allow list to access it.
It is worth noting that this only applies to the web client, the Office app for Windows, iOS, and Android will transition to the Microsoft 365 app in January 2023. Recently, we also got the chance to have a glimpse of what the app will look like when it will be launched.
