OpenAI didn’t do a very good job communicating about the roadmap of ChatGPT, but the CEO, Sam Altman wants to change that. In a recent post on X, he outlined the roadmap update for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5.
We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten. We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence.
Lately, there have been some problems with Copilot, and also ChatGPT had some hiccups in responding to queries. It’s really good news if GPT will just work, although everyone expects more from the 4.5 and 5 versions.
Altman also mentions that GPT-4.5 is internally code-named Orion and the goal for the next version is to unify the o-series and GPT-series models. The new system will use all the tools and depending on the query, the bot will know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks.
The OpenAI CEO added that GPT-5 will integrate all their technology, including o3 and that o3 will not be available as a standalone model.
In the free version, ChatGPT will have unlimited access to GPT-5, but with standard intelligence settings. If you’re a Plus subscriber, you will be able to access a higher level of intelligence.
Most importantly, Altman says that the new models will include voice, canvas, search, deep search and more.
Recently, OpenAI also released the updates for Model Spec, a document that defines the intended direction for the future of their models.
Are you excited about the upcoming GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 versions? Let’s talk about them in the comments below.
