Key notes
- To open SKV files on the PC, use Microsoft Excel, go with a third-party spreadsheet program, or convert the file into a supported format.
- Keep reading to explore all your options!
You can’t view SKV files natively (using the built-in applications) on Windows and Mac and will need dedicated software to open them. These files can be easily accessed in a spreadsheet-oriented program.
What is the SKV file type? SKV files are used to store text-based data. The SKV file format is similar to CSV, but while the former uses semicolons, the latter employs commas for data storage.
How do I open an SKV file?
1. Use Microsoft Excel
- Locate the .skv file, right-click on it, hover the cursor over Open with, and select Excel from the list of options.
- If Excel doesn’t appear here, select Choose another app, and then pick Excel from the list, and click on Just once or Always. The latter will make Excel the default program for SKV files.
You can similarly open an SKV file in Mac. Simply download Microsoft Office from the Mac App Store. Also, if you regularly have to open SKV files, we recommend setting Excel as the default app!
2. Go with a third-party file opener
There are several reliable third-party office suites that will allow you to open SKV files. While we have not tested it with all programs individually, users have reported being able to access the file’s content.
Remember, some data from the file might be missing when using another software, or the file may not open if it is not formatted correctly. In such cases, it’s best to use Microsoft Excel or recreate/redownload the SKV file.
3. Convert the file into a compatible format
If none of the options work, you can always convert SKV files to the CSV format and open them in a CSV-supported program. Also, the CSV format is compatible with Microsoft Excel.
To convert, use an online file converter or download one on the PC. A quick Google search will yield several results. Since not all such websites and files are safe, we recommend you have the firewall enabled and a secure antivirus solution running on the PC.
Remember to never convert the format by manually changing the file extension. This may end up corrupting the data and leaving the file unreadable!
Besides, if you regularly deal with such formats, it’s best to use a universal file opener. With it, you can get rid of individual programs for each file type!
