OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage solution for consumers, OneDrive for Business is their cloud storage solution for businesses. While the two are similar, they both have very different beginnings but have been united under one similar brand. Even though the two services are different technically, Microsoft is simplifying their OneDrive story to include unlimited storage across the board.
Now businesses who have subscribed to Office 365 ProPlus will have OneDrive for Business included in their plan. Previously ProPlus didn’t include OneDrive for Business because the plan was mostly focused on the Office programs and not the online services. Microsoft must have seen how even if people use the Office programs and don’t use Office Online, having syncing between devices is a great feature. OneDrive for Business can sync documents between computers so users no longer have to save the file to an online service then switch computers and go download it.
OneDrive for Business is a great solution for companies of any size to store files for access anywhere. In addition to making OneDrive for Business available to ProPlus customers, Microsoft is also planning on increasing the storage to unlimited cloud storage. This means that every user can store all their files online for access, backup, or sharing.
Offering OneDrive for Business to more customers free of charge is a good move for Microsoft. This means more companies are putting documents on the cloud and becoming more comfortable with file storage off the premises of the business. More customers becoming comfortable with the cloud could mean more of them sign up for Microsoft’s other cloud services like Yammer, Azure, and OWA.
