Facing a Reddit connection failure can be frustrating, and it’s usually due to server-side issues or local connection problems. First of all, visit theย Reddit Status pageย to check if Reddit is experiencing any outages. If so, you have nothing to do but wait it out. If that’s not the case, perform the solutions below.
How do I fix the Reddit connection failure?
1. Check your internet connection
- Ensure your device is connected to the internet.
- Open your web browser and try to visit other websites to confirm your internet connection is stable.
- If other websites are also not loading, restart your router by unplugging it, waiting for 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in.
- Once the internet is back up, refresh the Reddit page.
Checking your internet connection helps rule out network issues that might be causing the problem.
2. Clear your browser cache and cookies
- Open your web browser.
- Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner (for Chrome users).
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Scroll down and click on Privacy and security, then click on Clear browsing data.
- Make sure Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files are selected.
- Finally, click on Clear data.
Clearing your browser’s cache and cookies can resolve issues related to outdated or corrupt files interfering with your connection to Reddit. However, you may also check Reddit in another browser and see if it behaves the same.
3. Disable browser extensions
- Open your web browser.
- Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner (for Chrome users).
- Select More tools and then Extensions.
- Toggle off all extensions to disable them.
- Try accessing Reddit again.
Disabling browser extensions helps identify if any add-ons are causing the connection issue.
4. Use Incognito/Private Mode
- Open your web browser.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + N to open a new incognito window in Chrome. For Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + P to open a private browsing window.
- Navigate to Reddit.com in this new window.
Using incognito or private mode can bypass cache issues and extensions that may be causing the connection failure.
5. Flush the DNS cache
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box, typeย cmdย and select Run as administrator from the results.
- In Command Prompt, type or paste the following command and press Enter to run it:ย
ipconfig /flushdns
- You should see a message saying, Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.
- Restart your browser and try accessing Reddit again.
Flushing the DNS cache can resolve connection issues caused by outdated or incorrect DNS information.
6. Reset the network settings
- Click the Start button, typeย cmd, and select Run as administrator.
- In Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Resetting network settings can help resolve deeper network configuration issues affecting your Reddit connection.
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve most Reddit connection failures.
