Steps to fix Twitch loading issues on Chrome

  1. Make sure the Twitch isn’t down and check the connection
  2. Clear browsing data
  3. Disable Add-ons
  4. Scan for malware
  5. Disable Experimental features
  6. Try Twitch for Desktop

Twitch.tv started as a small gameplay streaming platform and now it has millions of daily followers. Most of the people follow their favorite streamers on the web client and a hefty number of those uses Google Chrome. Recently, some of them noticed issues with the web client, as Twitch, for no particular reason won’t load on Chrome.

We made sure to provide you with some solutions and workarounds for the problem at hand. Hopefully, with your effort and our helping hand, you’ll be able to get back to favorite content in no time.

What to do when Twitch fails to load on Google Chrome

1: Make sure the Twitch isn’t down and check the connection

Let’s start with the two essential steps. Firstly, make sure that the Twitch.tv service is up and running. It might be down due to a maintenance or the servers crashed. These are rare occurrences but we still encourage you to check the Twitch status before moving on to other solutions.

The second step is obvious. Yes, you’ve probably wouldn’t be able to read the content of this article without the fully functional internet connection. However, there are some things which, consequently, will affect the streaming and loading on the Twitch.tv web client.

We encourage you to temporarily disable all bandwidth-hogging applications. The torrent client or direct download manager are the ones you should disable firstly. In addition, while on Twitch, click on the Padlock icon in the Address bar and choose Site settings. Reset all permissions at the bottom and restart Chrome.

2: Clear browsing data

Let’s move on with the steps. Every browser, including Google Chrome, collects cookies and all other kinds of browsing data in order to speed up and improve the browsing experience. Every individual site has its own share of browsing data and this goes for the Twitch web client, as well.

Now, after the aforementioned data piles up, the browser will slow down and some features might suffer. For that reason, we suggest clearing all browsing data (don’t clear passwords if you don’t have them backed up).

If you’re not sure how to clear browsing data on Google Chrome, follow the instructions we enlisted below:

  1. Press Shift + Ctrl + Delete to open the “Clear browsing data” menu.
  2. Select “All time” as the time range.
  3. Focus on deleting ‘Cookies’, ‘Cached Images and Files‘, and other site data.
  4. Click on the Clear Data button.auto hide address bar chrome

3: Disable Add-ons

The days of third-party extensions which regulate flash and video playing are behind us. Nowadays, everything you need comes with the browser and you don’t need to install any add-ons to play videos or run Flash media. With that said, the presence of those and similar add-ons can create issues. In addition, ad-blockers and similar anti-tracking extensions can create various issues with the video playback during the streaming.

Because of that, we suggest running Chrome in the Incognito mode and accessing Twitch that way. If the problem is gone, we advise you to disable add-ons temporarily and use Chrome that way. If the problem is persistent, move on through the list.

4: Scan for malware

While we’re at it, there’s something worse than a mere presence of Chrome extensions. And those are PUPs and toolbars, browser hijackers and similar pop-up atrocities users often run into. They tend to integrate deep into the Registry and completely take over the browser. Once there, it’s quite hard to dig them out and remove them. Sometimes you won’t even know they’re there, slowly undermining the performance of already RAM-heavy Google Chrome.

For that reason, we suggest taking some precaution measures and performing a deep scan with an antivirus. In addition, you can use a specialized tool, like Malwarebytes AdwCleaner to remove all PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) from your PC.

Here’s how to perform a deep scan with Windows Defender:

5: Disable Experimental features

You can safely skip this step if you never meddled with the Experimental options in Chrome. There’s a lot of available options, some of them part of the Beta program. They’re most of the time safe to use on the standard Chrome release, but can occasionally slow down the browser or affect negatively some of the standard features.

If you’ve made certain tweaks in the Chrome Experimental menu, we suggest resetting them to default values. This action will disable all of them. However, if you know your way around these options, you can enable them individually and look for changes.

Here’s how to disable Experimental features on Google Chrome:

    1. Open Chrome.
    2. In the Address bar, type the following line and press Enter:
      • chrome://flags
    3. Click on Reset all to default.auto hide address bar chrome

6: Try Twitch for Desktop

Finally, if the Twitch web client still won’t load streams or recorded videos, we suggest an alternative. Besides the web client, Twitch.tv also offers a desktop client for Windows. It’s quite similar but still has additional options. Both for viewers and streamers. Chances are that the desktop client will work much better, especially as a dedicated application.

The installation procedure is rather simple, and you should be able to get Twitch in a matter of minutes. After that, you can sign in with your credentials and enjoy. Download the Twitch desktop client, here.auto hide address bar chrome

And on that note, we can wrap it up. Don’t forget to share alternative solutions or post questions in the comments section below. We look forward to hearing from you.
