Does Windows 11 consume more RAM? Before answering this question in-depth, it should be noted that the RAM consumption of an operating system depends on many factors.

One of them is the use you make of it: if your computer will only be used to browse the Internet or watch movies with, you will not need as much. However, if your activities are RAM-hungry, you should consider equipping your system with more RAM.

If you have a PC that is running on Windows 10, and you have updated it to the latest version of Windows 11, then you can expect some changes.

You will notice that everything seems to be faster, a new interface and you will see some new icons.

One of the biggest changes that you can expect from Windows 11 is the fact that it uses more RAM than its predecessor.

Why does Windows 11 consume more RAM?

Windows 11 is likely to consume more RAM because of several factors. The main one is that it’s a huge upgrade from Windows 10. It is a very powerful and feature-rich operating system that puts a lot of load on the system hardware.

High CPU or RAM consumption can cause problems like slow performance, lagging, applications not responding, or other related issues.

So, why does Windows 11 consume more RAM? Here are a few possible reasons:

  • Unnecessary apps or programs Sometimes, due to unnecessary apps or programs running in the background, the RAM gets consumed very quickly. To solve this problem, you need to check what apps or programs are running and terminate them. You can also uninstall those apps which you don’t use at all. This will free up your RAM and make your computer faster.
  • Too many tabs open in your browser It is true that opening too many tabs can eat up a lot of memory, but this is not a problem exclusive to Windows 11. All modern browsers are capable of eating up GBs of RAM if you open multiple tabs with heavy websites, like YouTube or Facebook.
  • Too many background apps The background apps number is high because it includes all of the applications that are running, even if they’re not actively using your computer’s resources. In this particular instance, If you’re seeing a high number of background apps and you think it’s affecting your computer’s performance, you can close apps that you don’t need running.
  • Virus infection The most common reason for extremely high CPU usage in Windows is a virus infection. A highly infectious virus can hog your processor, preventing it from doing anything else. That’s why it’s important to scan your computer with an antivirus program regularly.

If you encounter any of these problems, do not fret as there are ways to keep your OS from consuming too much RAM.

What can I do if Windows 11 consumes more RAM?

How much RAM does Windows 11 require?

Microsoft creates the minimum requirements for its operating systems to be compatible with most computer configurations. However, it is not always easy to meet them because of the increasingly demanding software and games.

In this regard, Microsoft’s minimum system requirements for Windows 11 are somewhat more demanding than those of its predecessor.

Even though that’s what Microsoft says you need, it’s not always enough. If your PC is a bit older, you may see some lag while running Windows 11. Opening up programs and apps can take longer, and you may experience freezing or crashing if you try to multitask too much.

The amount of RAM required for Windows 11 depends on your processor and the programs you use. With a 64-bit operating system, it is possible to install more RAM than most users will need.

If you see that your system is consuming more RAM, then you should be concerned about it.

Can I increase my RAM in Windows 11?

While it’s possible to increase the amount of RAM in your system, you should first determine if the RAM you have is sufficient for your needs.

If you’re upgrading or building a new computer, you can allot some of the cost savings toward additional RAM, which can help your system run more efficiently and make multitasking easier.

It is important to note that whether you have a desktop or laptop computer, installing more RAM won’t increase your processor speed. To upgrade your CPU, you must replace your current processor with a faster one.

The general rule of thumb is that if you can use less than 4 GB of RAM in Windows 11 without swapping (writing data to disk when physical memory is full), then 4 GB is enough for most people.

This includes web browsing, office productivity tools like Word and Excel, emailing and messaging, music and video playback, etc.

If you want to do video editing or other memory-intensive tasks on a regular basis, then 8 GB or more might be a better bet.

For specialized tasks such as photo and video editing or running several virtual machines simultaneously, you will need at least 16GB.
