Microsoft has officially launched the Windows App on Android, marking the end of the Remote Desktop app on the platform. This new application serves as a unified access point for Microsoft’s virtualization services, including Remote Desktop, Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box.
The Windows App brings several enhancements over its predecessor, such as a redesigned user interface, improved user experience, and support for Chrome OS. Additionally, the app introduces passkey support for modern security and authentication, ensuring a safer and more streamlined connection process.
Microsoft has been gradually phasing out the Remote Desktop app across various platforms, with support for the app set to end on May 27, 2025. The Windows App is now available on macOS, iOS, web, and Android and can also be downloaded on Windows, where it will eventually replace the old Remote Desktop app.
The company reports that the Windows App has already logged over 425 million hours of usage across all platforms. While the new app has been praised for its functionality, some users have expressed concerns about its name, finding “Windows App” less intuitive than “Remote Desktop App.”
The Windows App came just in time, as the new Windows 365 Link device became available worldwide. If you don’t know, this pocket-sized device is the newest Cloud PC from the Redmond-based tech giant.
