Windows 10 and the browsers that are installed on your device are using built-in security features to protect your personal info and keep everything secured all the time. These built-in security tools determine if certain web pages are safe or not.

However, sometimes your Internet access might be blocked, even the websites that you’re visiting are safe. That explains why you’re getting the ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH alert.

This alert will also tell you that This site can’t provide a secure connection, meaning that the browser cannot verify the SSL certificate for the implied website or webpage.

While this is an extremely useful security feature, sometimes even trusted sites might be blocked too (for example, you can receive the ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH alert when you try to sign-in into your bank account).

This error is somehow similar to the ‘This website might not be trusted by your browser’ error. For more information on how to fix this error, check out this troubleshooting guide.

And now, let’s see how we can fix the SSL mismatch error.

How to get rid of ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH error

  1. Adjust security settings
  2. Use UR Browser to get rid of browser errors
  3. Disable quic protocol
  4. Clear SSL Certificate Cache
  5. Turn off SSL scanning from antivirus software

Do note that before applying any troubleshooting solution from this tutorial you need to understand how browsing security works.

It’s important to access certain webpages only if you are sure that the connection is secured – otherwise you might end up in dealing with a malware attack.

So, when the ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH alert appears, first make sure that you know everything about the web page that is causing this error.

1. Adjust security settings

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. In the search bar type chrome://flags and press Enter.disable experimental options chrome
  3. Look for the Minimum SSL/TLS version supported the entry.
  4. Click on it and choose SSLv3.
  5. Select the Re-launch option.
  6. Restart Chrome and retry to establish your connection again.

2. Use UR Browser to get rid of browser errors

It’s important to know the error at hand appears mostly on Google Chrome. With that in mind, this might be the time to check an alternative browser, UR Browser.

UR Browser, made by a small independent team and acknowledged by Europan Commission, puts user’s privacy in the spotlight.

So, instead of trying to troubleshoot a variety of issues on the latest build of Chrome, why not give UR Browser a chance and get rid of these annoying errors for good?

Have in mind that, at this time, the browser is still in the development. And, in spite of it, it works great. Extensive usage or casual browsing the interwebs, it doesn’t matter.

Check it out and see for yourself.

ur browser
  • Fast page loading

3. Disable quic protocol

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. In the search bar enter chrome://flags/#enable-quic.disable quic browser
  3. Select the first entry that’s displayed and change its status into disabled.
  4. Save the changes and restart Chrome.

4. Clear SSL Certificate Cache

Windows will store SSL certificate history by default in order to make your browsing experience faster. However, this might be the reason why you get the ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH alert. So, clear the SSL Certificate cache by doing the following:

  1. Press the Win+R keyboard hotkeys for bringing the Run box.
  2. There type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Internet Properties will be now displayed on your Windows 10 device.
  4. From there switch to the Content tab.
  5. Click on Clear SSL state.clear SSL windows 10
  6. Save your changes and close this window in the end.

5. Turn off SSL scanning from antivirus software

The ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH issue might be caused by your antivirus program. So, just disable the SSL scanning feature from your security programs before retrying your network connection. Here is how you can complete this task on one of the most popular antivirus programs:

BitDefender:

  • Open the BitDefender interface and access Settings.
  • From there go to Privacy Control and switch to Antiphishing tab.
  • Disable Scan SSL.
  • On other BitDefender versions you might have to access Protection and from under Web Protection, you can find the Scan SSL feature.

AVAST:

  • Open Avast and navigate towards Settings.
  • Select Active Protection and under Web Shield select Customize.
  • From there you can disable the SSL scan.

Kaspersky:

  • Access Kaspersky’s Settings page.
  • From there go to Network Settings.
  • SSL settings will be displayed at this point.
  • Just disable the settings that are related to the SSL scan.

Keep in mind that the ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH error is a security alert that’s telling you one thing: you are trying to access a web page that cannot be trusted. So, try to disable this alert only if you are sure that you can safely navigate towards the respective website.

Always use an antivirus or antimalware program with web browsing security features set. For more information on the best antivirus for browsing that you can use, check out this list.

It’s better to deal with network errors than lose your personal files because of a malware attack. Anyway, the steps from above should help you solve the ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH error on Google Chrome.
