Here's everything you need to know about Bluesky, the X alternative, backed by X's former CEO

Bluesky, a relatively new social media platform that’s been touted as the alternative to X (formerly known as Twitter) and is backed by X’s former CEO and founder, Jack Dorsey, has now ended in closed beta and has become open to the general public.

That means new users won’t have to wait (or get) for special invites. They can just sign up, and join Bluesky right now, as social media is now available to all Android, and iOS users everywhere.

If you’re not sure about Bluesky, and Twitter, we mean X, has become too much for you, it’s better to know what you’re dealing with before deciding to join. So we’ve gathered up some things you need to know about it.

1. Bluesky is a decentralized X, but the UI is the same

If you’ve been using X, or Twitter, as they used to call it, one of the best things about it was the simplistic UI which has always been on point: that means you have easy access to content, and the feedback automatically updates itself after each refresh.

Bluesky says it’s a decentralized social media network, and according to its manifesto, which can be read here, this means that the network has multiple providers for every part of the system.

It also allows everyone to contribute to content moderation and community management.

2. It already has over 3 million users

Bluesky recently crossed 3 million users and this number will greatly increase following the decision to make it public to everyone.

So, for those thinking it could not rival X, well, just give it time, it will get there.

3. It supports all sorts of media content, including NSFW content

Unlike the other X rival, Threads, Bluesky follows X’s path, and it allows all sorts of content from news, art, and even nudity, as NSFW content is allowed on the platform.

This specific content will be highly regulated and policies can be enabled so that it will be safe for everyone. The platform employs a technology first pioneered by Tumblr, another platform where NSFW content is allowed, although in a limited capacity. The technology is called community labels, and it aims to provide users with the ability to filter content based on their preferences.

4. It’s available to everyone, on Android, and iOS, as well as desktop devices

Bluesky is now available to everybody, and you no longer need an invite to join the platform. However, keep in mind that the platform will most likely have lagging issues these days, due to the sudden high number of users joining.

5. It can be the perfect alternative to X, or Threads

For those complaining X is no longer what it used to be, Bluesky can be the perfect choice to try a new microblogging social network. It keeps all the X features, while also being decentralized, and unlike Threads, you will find all sorts of content on it.
