Microsoft starts rolling out Designer in Word on the web

If the designer feature has long been available in Microsoft PowerPoint, it’s now finally coming to Microsoft Word. Harri Mikkanen, a Microsoft 365 Product Marketing Manager at Microsoft, confirmed in a tweet that the feature is now rolling out in the Word web app.

The new Designer feature facilities students and working professionals by transforming their documents into something special by automatically generating design suggestions. Microsoft addresses Day 1 bugs and fixes for Xbox Series X|S consoles

Despite Microsoft’s newest console coming fresh off the manufacturing line tomorrow, the company has issued a list of bugs and known issues owners should be aware of as they take the wraps off their new console.

According to a Microsoft Community forum post authored by Microsoft Agent and moderator Mister Rush, there are quite a few caveats for Day 1 One owners of Xbox Series X|S when starting up the consoles for the first time.

Fresh out of the box, owners will need to be aware of 4K/120hz issues that involve TVs with outputs of 4K @ 120Hz and support for VRR experiencing image corruption. Fortunately, there is are workarounds:

  • Update to the latest firmware on your TV
  • If using an LG TV – https://www.lg.com/us/support/software-firmware-drivers
  • If using a Samsung TV – https://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/
  • If using a Vizio TV – https://support.vizio.com/s/firmware-search
  • If the issue still persists, also consider trying the following:
  • Configure the console for 4K/60 with VRR by going to Setting> General> TV & display options> Video Modes> check the box for Allow variable refresh rate.
  • Configure the console for 4k/120 with no VRR by going to Setting> General> TV & display options> Video Modes> uncheck the box for Allow variable refresh rate. The resolution and refresh rates are found under “Display” in TV & Display options.
  • If you wish to experience 120hz and VRR, please configure for 1080p/120hz VRR or 1440p/120hz VRR by Setting> General> TV & display options> Video Modes> check the box for Allow variable refresh rate. The resolution and refresh rates are found under “Display” in TV & Display options.
  • If you are experiencing a corrupted image, here are your workarounds to reverting back to a safe video mode:
  • Restart your console and configure your video modes to one of the listed options above.

  • If the issue still persists after steps 1 and 2, perform the video mode reset sequence to get back to a safe state and configure for one of the two options above. Microsoft is also acknowledging an issue with core system interactions such as HDR Game Captures appearing too dark when recorded. Again, no real solution here offered by Microsoft except that “a fix will be coming soon in a future console update.”

Another core component that needs to be cautiously reviewed by owners is the Quick Resume function Microsoft has been touting for the past few weeks. According to Microsoft, thousands of titles should support this on day one, but owners may experience issues with the handful of titles that aren’t yet optimized to take advantage of its existence. Ahead of complaints, Microsoft has proactively disabled the feature for those titles and is looking to put in a fix as soon as it can.

Lastly, there are some media-related issues that involve the BBC iPlayer app not launching or installing on the consoles on day one, DVD & Blue-ray playback glitching that can be resolved by reinserting discs, and NBC’s Peakcock TV app showing pixelated content out of the box with no immediate remedy.

Some of these issues are niche occurrences, but in totality, add up to a console in need of a hefty Day One or Month One update to sort out a number of user experiences that could begin to taint the launch of Microsoft’s next-gen console efforts, again.

Halo 4 will be released on PC on November 17, completing the PC version of Halo: MCC anthology that brought us all Halo games from the Bungie era in less than a year. Indeed, Halo: Reach, the first game in the collection was released on PC on December 3, 2019.

The PC version of Halo 4 will launch alongside the Xbox Series X/S optimized version of Halo: MCC, which was announced last month. Halo 4 and the rest of the Halo games in the collection will support 120FPS in Campaign and Multiplayer on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, and Microsoft also announced split-screen improvements and up to 4K graphics for all games on the Series X. QoS, short for Quality of Service, is an essential feature for routers nowadays. What this feature essentially does is prioritize bandwidth allocation for certain devices connected to the router.

Therefore, if your household has several devices connected to the router, and all of them are using bandwidth, QoS can help you decide which devices/apps get more of it.

For instance, if one of your roommates is streaming Netflix movies, and another is on a torrenting frenzy while you’re trying to play an online game, you’ll have an awful time without QoS.

Enabling QoS can help you prioritize online games (or your PC, depending on the router model), so it always gets the appropriate amount of bandwidth. Oh, your roommates? They’ll probably just share the leftover bandwidth.

  • Pro tip: Always prioritize by application, if possible. That way, you can have enough bandwidth on multiple devices, as long as you’ll fit in the QoS configuration scheme.

5. Avoid double NAT-ing

If you’re in a double NAT situation, it can quickly take a toll on your gaming session. Aside from the fact that you may not be able to access certain servers (or host your own public servers, for that matter), there’s also the speed factor.

Many users complained that their double NAT configuration slows down their connection and increases their online ping.

Microsoft confirms Windows 10/11 forced reboot and BSOD bugs

Although Microsoft throttled the delivery of the Windows 10 20H2 update, many users still managed to get their hands on it before others could. However, some of the lucky ones who received the update experienced some critical issues.

Users have reported getting forced reboot warnings shortly after signing in, which obviously ended in their systems being rebooted. On the same note, others have been greeted by Windows’ Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), which obviously translates into system crashes.

Microsoft issued warnings, recommends rollback

In light of these recent developments, Microsoft issued a couple of warnings regarding updating to the latest version, as it may not be perfectly stable for certain users.

Additionally, the company recommends users to roll back to a previous, working version of the operating system until the situation is under control.

The rollback recommendation is mainly addressed to users who have experienced these problems. Therefore, if you’ve managed to update and everything is a-ok, you don’t need to worry about it. Not yet, at least.

Device incompatibility causing the issue

Microsoft and Intel have identified some compatibility issues with Thunderbolt NVMe SSDs. Plugging such a device in after upgrading to Windows 10 2004 or 20H2 can lead to a BSOD.

Microsoft has made efforts to ensure that incompatible devices don’t receive the update by adding compatibility blocks. And for good reason, too.

It would appear that forcefully updating to Windows 10 2004 or 20H2 can trigger the BSOD if your system isn’t eligible for an upgrade.

To avoid this situation entirely, make sure your device is compatible before upgrading by checking for updates only from Windows’ built-in Update Checker.

If you see any compatibility blocks, don’t try to force the upgrade by using physical media or other means of deployment.

You might experience BSODs and need to revert to a previous, working version of the operating system, which is not exactly a breeze to do.

Windows 10 force-reboots some systems

Yet another bug rendering your PC almost unusable is the forced reboot one that Microsoft recently confirmed. This one might seem a bit more forgiving than the BSOD one we described above, but it’s just as merciless regarding system usability.

After upgrading to Windows 10 20H2, if you’re among the unlucky affected ones, Windows will prompt you with a message, informing you that your PC will restart automatically in one minute. The message is followed by a forced reboot of your system.

To make matters worse, rebooting your system or logging out of your user account still spawns this error. Therefore, you’ll need to roll back to a previous, stable version of Windows 10 to fix it.

As with the BSOD, Microsoft already applied a compatibility hold on affected devices. So, if your system is not deemed to accommodate the update without any incidents, it’s best if you don’t force it.

Outlook on Windows and iOS will soon make it easier to join Teams meetings

Microsoft Outlook is about to get a new Meet Now feature that will allow users to start an instant meeting in Microsoft Teams. The update initially appears to be targeted at the Outlook Windows client first in December, with the iOS version of the app to follow in the coming months.

Currently, meeting organizers have to set up a video call by creating a link in their web browser or with the Teams desktop client by clicking the Meet Now button. This isn’t a smooth workflow for people who often need to deal with back to back meetings. With the Meet Now option, Outlook users will be able to instant Teams meeting right from the Calendar tab on their Windows PCs.

With the upcoming update though, joining meetings in the iOS version of the app is also about to get a whole lot easier. Stephan Frühwirth, a Digital Workplace Specialist at Microsoft, revealed on LinkedIn that the Outlook widget for iOS14 will show a “Join” option for users’ upcoming Teams meetings. It is important to note that the iOS Widgets are only supported on iOS 14 released earlier this fall.

Apparently, the iOS app will support some other video conferencing services as well. A Twitter user named Tero Alhonen posted on August 10, “You’ll now see a Join button on events from common online meeting providers such as Zoom, WebEx, BlueJeans, and GoToMeeting.” However, it remains to be seen if Outlook for Windows will offer similar capabilities too.

Needless to say, the new meeting experience should help participants boost productivity, and it could end up leading more people to use the Teams Meet Now option. Overall, it’s good to see that the meeting experience is evolving, especially when Microsoft Teams currently has more than 115 million daily active users.
