Folder Doesn’t Open on External Hard Drive? Try This

It is common to use two hard drives on a PC nowadays. Usually, you keep the faster SSD as your system drive, while the slower ones can be kept for storage.

However, if you use a laptop or both the SSD and the HHD are full, an external HDD can do the trick. However, with extra space and portability comes a new set of possible issues, some of which users have already started reporting:

I just purchased an HP Pavilion All in One with Windows 10. I have an external hard drive with all my pictures and stores business documents. This is one folder for my Ho Association that I cannot open  . Did change properties on that one, and was able to open, but now cannot opens any subfolders ” you don’t currently have permission to access this folder”.

Since this is a pretty common issue among users, we’ve created a step-by-step guide that will show you exactly what needs to be done to fix it.

How do I get my external hard drive folders to open?

1. Make sure the folders have all the proper permissions

1.1 Change folder permissions manually

  1. Open File Explorer
  2. Open the external hard drive
  3. Locate the folder that gives you the error message
  4. Right-click the whole folder and select Properties
  5. Go to the Security tabsecurity advanced
  6. Select Advanced
  7. Depending on your account type, make sure you give yourself full control over the folderfull permissions
  8. Select Apply
  9. Restart the PC
  10. Try opening the folder again

1.2 Change folder permissions via command line

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type in cmd.exe
    • This will open the Command Prompt
  3. Type in the following lines, and press Enter after each ones:
  • takeown /f Path_And_File_Name
  • icacls Path_And_File_Name /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F
    • The file path changes depending on where your external hard drive and the folder are located.

Looking for an external HDD with lots of space? Check out our article for some top picks.

2. Make sure the folder isn’t corrupted

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type in cmd.exe
  3. Type in the following line, and press Enter:
    • chkntfs c:
  4. Reboot the PC

By following these steps, your user profile should gain total control over the entire contents of everything in the file path.

As such, you can open, edit, and delete whatever file you like without encountering more error messages. Additionally, folder corruption should no longer prevent you from accessing your files.

Another issue with the external drives is the delayed write failed error, but this guide will help you fix it.

Too Many Requests on Dropbox: How to Fix it

Dropbox is a popular cloud storage platform offering free and premium storage plans. It allows sharing and viewing of files on the cloud. Sometimes, while sharing a file or accessing a Dropbox link, you may encounter the Too many requests error in Dropbox.

Dropbox offers 20 GB of free bandwidth daily, and the premium plan users get up to 200 GB of bandwidth. That said, the Too many requests error can occur for several reasons, but most are easy to fix. Keep reading to find out!

Why is Dropbox not allowing me to upload files?

Here are the primary reasons Dropbox shows an error when uploading files:

  • Issues with the Internet connection: A slow Internet connection or one where there is an intermittent loss of connectivity can affect the file uploads.
  • File type not supported: Though Dropbox supports most file formats, there are some it doesn’t. And when trying to upload a file that’s not supported, you may receive an error.
  • Corrupt or large cache: If the Dropbox cache gets corrupted or is too big in size, you are likely to encounter issues while uploading files.
  • Account suspension: Many users realized that an account suspension prevented them from uploading files to Dropbox.

How do I fix Too many requests error on Dropbox?

Tip icon Tip
Since the error can be encountered on all devices, including a desktop, tablets, and mobile phones, we have listed solutions that can be applied across them all.

Before we move to the slightly complex ones, here are a few quick solutions to try:

  • Restart the device and the router, and then try uploading files to Dropbox.
  • Make sure the device has a stable Internet connection.
  • Verify if the file you are trying to upload to Dropbox is infected with malware because, in that case, the Too many requests error may appear. Use a reliable antivirus solution to scan the files before uploading.

If none work, move to the fixes listed next.

1. Check for account suspension

If the users cross the allowed limit of 20 GB bandwidth, Dropbox automatically suspends the account for policy violation. The over-usage ban stays in effect for 24-72 hours. With each violation, the suspension time increases.

Check if you have received any bandwidth use violation alert in the Dropbox account or email. If you have multiple violations, you may have to wait a few days to remove the suspension.

According to Dropbox, upgrading to the Plus plan will remove any suspension, along with increasing the bandwidth size to 200GB/day.

2. Check for copyright violations

If the file shared by you is reported by someone as part of a DMCA request, Dropbox will show the Too many requests error. This usually happens with Dropbox files that are shared publicly.

Make sure the file shared by you doesn’t have any copyright claim. Sharing pirated or illegal content can lead to permanent account suspension.

3. Check if the file link is disabled

  1. Login to Dropbox account.
  2. Go to the Shared links page.
  3. Click three dots beside the link with the error, select Link Settings, and again choose Link Settings.
  4. Make sure Disable downloads option is off.dropbox disable download
  5. Now try to reaccess the links and check for any improvements.

If you have disabled the file link, you may come across the Dropbox Too many requests error. So, make sure the link you are trying to share is enabled.

4. Create new shared links

  1. Login to your Dropbox account.
  2. Go to the Shared links page.
  3. Click on More (…) besides the link with the error, and select the Delete link option.
  4. Now create a new shared link for the file.

If you rewound your Dropbox account recently, your shared link may stop working. To fix this, create new shared links, and you shouldn’t come across the Too many requests error in Dropbox anymore.

Before you leave, check some quick tips to increase the Wi-Fi speed in Windows and get faster uploads and downloads.

Lenovo Yoga C940 15″: A better desktop replacement than practical 2-in-1

Starting at $1,299.99

  • WiFi 6 Capabilities

Lenovo is back at it with refinements to its Yoga C class series of laptops. In 2018 Lenovo brought us a Dolby Atmos powered soundbar hinge that put audio at the center of the C930 experience, and in the fall of 2019, the company followed up its C930 with the C940, wait for it, 15-inch.

That’s right, the C940 has gotten a screen bump from last year and now comes in a 15-inch variant with much of the same design and functionality of the C930 in tow.

2018 vs. 2019

The focal point of the C930 was its impressive new take on a 360-degree hinge. Lenovo did away with its standard 3-point double bracketed 360-hinge, or the patented “watchband” setup and instead opted for a single triangular soundbar able to output evenly in various configurations. In 2019, Lenovo managed to pack more battery and a larger screen into the 940 while adhering to the same winning design of the C930. In the end, anyone loving the C930 but reliant on 15 and 16-inch model laptops to be productive, have now had their wishes come true.

Back in 2018 when I reviewed the C930, I found the sound experience to be outstanding for a laptop.

As a small anecdotal comparison, I normally have to turn the volume up to 60 (using Microsoft’s proprietary volume controls) or beyond on most devices to achieve what I was easily able to at 35 on the C930. The sound never became distorted or whispy when listening. Lenovo has done a great job at producing really clear mids with this speaker as well as offer solid bass performance without it edging into an artificial hollow territory. The sound on the C930, in my opinion, has more clarity than on the Surface Laptop, more base than the latest MacBook Pro, and is more robust in sound than any other laptop on the market.

In 2019, the experience remains the same. The C940’s soundbar contains a similar two tweeter, down-firing woofer, and a vibration buffering set up that produces bigger and less tinny sound when watching Netflix or listening to Spotify. While I typically listen to Podcasts during my day, there are occasions where the C940 15-inch served as my office radio for a more eclectic listening experience.

While many reviewers have compared and awarded the listening experience to Apple’s new 16-inch Macbook Pro, I still find the sound of the C940 to be preferable in my anecdotal review. While the 16-inch Macbook Pro does handle bass a bit better than the C940, Lenovo’s offering offers a less muddled sound than the Macbook Pro, in my opinion. The C940 consistently produced cleaner and fuller sounds in the high and mid categories.

However, Lenovo isn’t attempting to just sell the C940 15″ as a standalone speaker.

Weight. Battery. Screen.

At a little over 4lbs, the C940 comes in considerably heftier than its predecessor and its competition in the market outweighing the Macbook Pro by almost a pound and the Dell XPS by 3/4’s of one.

However, the extra weight comes with a 69-watt hour battery capacity which enabled me to get roughly 8 hours works days out of the device. With the C940 pushing a 4K VESA-certified DisplayHDR panel with “ultra-narrow” bezels at 500 nits at 15.6-inches, the extra battery capacity was appreciated day in and day out during my review.

According to Lenovo’s website, the brightness level of the C940 could produce up to 50% brighter outputs than standard SDR displays; I did not notice that much of a difference between brightness on the C940 and the C930, to be honest.

Precision Cut

Unlike the C930 2018 model, the C940’s finish feels less refined with sharper edges around the lid and keyboard deck amongst the noticeable differences. The C940 does adhere to the smooth aluminum unibody finish as its predecessors and also comes in an identical muted dark grey color.

At the top of the C940 is the etch branded webcam lip that enables users to ideally, pop open the lid with a single finger while also creating a cut out to put a 720p webcam into, without sacrificing space for a thinning bezel profile.

The Power

At the end of the day, the C940 15-inch should be used more as a desktop replacement than a true portable 2-in-1. It is neither light nor 2-in-1 friendly thanks to the increase in screen size. One-handed use was almost entirely out of the question for me, but where it makes up for its deficiencies as a 2-in-1, is in the specs department.

With a 9th generation Intel Core i7-9750H and up to six-core 45-watt CPU the performance was excellent. I was able to fly through download and upload of Power BI reports, Excel Docs, large PowerPoint presentations and even run a few machine learning test in a VM environment before exporting the data to Azure in under 3 mins.

The Yoga C940 15” comes configured with Intel’s 9th generation Core H-series processors designed specifically for high-performance laptops. The H-series processors are powered by six cores that boast desktop-class performance – perfect for power users or content creators who need extra horsepower for their daily tasks.

I’m not a videographer, so I can’t relay the reads and writes speeds of encoded video to and from the device, but for the rest of you, multiple Chrome and Edge tab usage combined with a few proprietary work and web apps all running on a relatively stable Fast Ring Insider build went mostly unnoticed (which is a good thing.)

However, what didn’t go unnoticed was the fan.

Routinely, the C940 would blast past 45 decibels as it roared to life like a jet engine on Windows 10 build installs, battery charging, torrent or content downloads and more.

With that being said, whenever the device was lapable, it maintained an even temperature while the fans pumped out warm air in multiple directions.

Gaming

Instead of standard integrated graphics, the Yoga C940 15” is equipped with NVIDIA’s GTX 1650 with Max-Q graphics. Apparently, this is to help further boost the performance capabilities of the device.  While thermal management is one of the biggest engineering challenges with high-performance laptops, NVIDIA’s Max-Q graphics cards address this hurdle by striking a balance between thermal output and performance, for the most part.

The Max-Q technology targets the peak efficiency of a system and is supposed to intelligently limit the power ceiling to avoid generating too much heat.

On the whole, it works as advertised, for short bursts of gaming.

Pen. Keyboard. Bioauthentication

As with the C930, the C940 also comes with Lenovo’s rechargeable Integrated pen in its very own dedicated slot on the device. Flipping the device over reveals a slot on the bottom half of the laptop.

Sadly, Lenovo is doing away with the Pen’s springboard mechanism and instead, users will need to use their fingernails to pry out the pen. The Integrated Pen maintains the same 4K pressure and sensitivity points which make for a great low latency writing experience. I was able to make a few doodles and jot down some notes with the pen, but not much more.

As with most new Windows 10 PCs, there are bio authentication methods, namely the fingerprint scanner, as an IR camera was seemingly left out of development. While a bit maddening for someone coming from a Surface or Dell XPS, the shortcomings of doing without IR blasting and retina recognition is easily conquered after a few days of handling the C940.

What I couldn’t get over was the keyboard and touchpad set up. I get that this is a beast of a workstation and I appreciate the numeric keypad being addressed and built right into the device.

However, shifting over the mousepad to one side was something I never really got over. I continually wanted to reach to the center of the C940 to move and navigate objects onscreen and had to take an extra beat to remember to shift my hand placement over.

Perhaps, for ergonomic reasons that align with the inclusion of the numeric key configuration but it was an experience that rang a sour note during my testing.

Along with what I think is a misplaced keypad was the tactile feel of the keypad, that, after months of use felt out of alignment with the rest of the palm deck. The left-clicking area remained repressed and sunken under the ridge of the trackpad mount. Clicking the trackpad was mostly a fine experience but there were occasions where clicking it either resulted in wildly inaccurate responses or no responses at all.

Summary

In the end, Lenovo pushed out a refresh of the Lenovo 930 with a slightly larger 15.6-inch screen, heavier build design and famed rotating soundbar hinge. The specs are up to date and will remain relevant for the foreseeable future. However, the convertible 2-in-1 design seems wasted on the C940, due in part to increase in size and weight. When spec’d out to the max, the C940 is probably best served as a portable desktop option that occasionally makes it off the desk and into a living room, board room or conference room.

Who is the C940 for?

Anyone who wants a premium 15-inch plus laptop that checks off the fundamental features of a modern desktop workstation. Decent battery life, larger more vibrant screen, latest Intel chips, included pen, bio authentication and a sound experience that is second-to-none on anything that isn’t a dedicated speaker these days.

How to automatically download Outlook images on Mac

Outlook is a popular email client that is being used across multiple platforms for its simplicity and features. However, to protect the users, the Outlook client for Mac by default requires you to download the email images manually.

But what if you want to make Outlook download images automatically on Mac?

For privacy reasons, Outlook does not download email pictures by default. By embedding a hyperlinked image, the sender can trace your IP address, provided that the sender is good at what they do.

In this article, we discuss how you can make Outlook download images automatically on Mac irrespective of whether the sender is in your contacts or not.

How can I enable auto image downloading in Outlook for Mac?

Outlook download images automatically Mac

  1. Start the Outlook client.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu bar.
  3. Click on the Reading entry.
  4. On the reading page, select “in all messages” for “Automatically download a picture from the internet” under the Security section.
  5. Alternatively, you can also download images from the email received from your contacts. For that, select “in messages from my contact” option.
  6. Save the changes and exit the Preference window.

Start the Outlook client and open an email that has images in it. All the images in the email should automatically download and load now.

According to Microsoft, Outlook for Mac doesn’t automatically download pictures or photos in email messages if the images are stored on the Internet. This is to help the user prevent leaking of personal information or even alert the sender that your email address is active.

Although you can change this setting in the Preferences, it is recommended to allow automatic downloading of images only from your saved contacts.

Office 365 subscribers in the US can now enjoy some free services from Microsoft’s partners (updated)

Office 365 subscriptions already have plenty of value thanks to 1TB of OneDrive storage, free Skype minutes, and more, but it’s about to get better for a few people. Indeed, Microsoft is now promoting that Office 365 Home & Personal subscribers can now enjoy some freebies and benefits from their partners.

(Update: unfortunately, due to the single use tokens attached to these links, they do not work correctly when directly linked from this post, so we’ve removed them)

Currently, on our end, we’re seeing two specific benefits. This includes three months free of Epic! and a complimentary 3-month pass to curated classes from CreativeLive. For those that are unfamiliar, Epic! is an online subscription service that gives millions of families and classrooms instant, unlimited access to thousands of books, videos, and quizzes from leading publishers. CreativeLive, meanwhile, is an online education platform that broadcasts live classes to an international audience.

You can see which benefits are available for you by signing in with the email linked to your Office 365 account and visiting Microsoft’s landing page here. The Epic! offer requires no credit card, and the CreativeLive offer requires signing in with a Microsoft Account. CreativeLive’s offer also includes the CreativeLive Starter Pass, which unlocks 300+ hours of creative classes.

Overall, these partners and their services line up perfectly with the educational and family audience that Microsoft targets with Office 365. Please be aware, though, that this looks to be a limited-time offer only. The Epic! Offer is valid through February 29, 2020. CreativeLive, meanwhile, is valid until February 29, 2020. The offer also appears to be only available in the United States.

Fix: Unable to download file could not be written to the cache

When trying to print a report from MYOB AE, you could encounter the error Unable to download. The file could not be written to the cache.

This also happens while attempting to generate a schedule within a Client Accounting – Assets period or when trying to download a PDF file using Internet Explorer.

You can’t just sit there and do nothing. You have to take action and solve the impossibility to download files. Speaking of which, be sure we’ll do our best to help you get to the bottom of it.

How can I fix the download file not written to cache error?

1. Uncheck Do not save encrypted pages to disk

uncheck Do not save encrypted pages to disk

  1. Launch Internet Explorer on the affected computer.
  2. Select Tools from the menu bar.
  3. Select Internet Options from the drop-down menu.
  4. Then, click the Advanced tab.
  5. Scroll down to Security options.
  6. Under Security find where it says Do not save encrypted pages to disk and uncheck the option.
  7. Click Apply, followed by OK.
  8. Restart the PC for these latest changes to take effect.

Internet Explorer has a few great security features. That’s one of them. Refer to the above steps even if it’s recommended to keep this box checked.

Internet Explorer will start saving encrypted pages containing secure information to the cache. This includes passwords and credit card numbers, which may sound a bit insecure.

However, it sounds like a compromise to think of when it helps getting rid of the problem.

2. Start Internet Explorer in No Add-ons mode

start in No Add-ons mode

  1. Click Start and type Internet Explorer in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Internet Explorer (No Add-On).
  3. You can also open the Run box from the Menu, then type the following command-line argument and hit Enter: iexplore.exe –extoff.
  4. Internet Explorer will open without add-ons, toolbars, or plug-ins.
  5. Test Internet Explorer to verify that it works correctly and you can download files.
  6. If you need to, enter into Internet Options > Manage Add-ons and enable or disable each add-on to identify which one is creating problems.

This procedure allows Internet Explorer to temporarily run without any add-ons. So, it is useful when you want to troubleshoot incompatible browser add-ons or extensions and root out your download file error.

3. Double-check server settings

Cache-Control
This issue may also occur if any one or both these conditions are true:

  • The server sends the Cache-Control: No Store header.
  • The server sends the Cache-Control: No Cache header.

Knowing the core of the matter, also make sure that the server does not send the Cache-Control: No Store or the Cache-Control: No Cache header. This can be useful if the server is currently disallowing the caching of content.

If you’re still dealing with the issue and you use a proxy server, ensuring you have configured your Proxy Server to work with MYOB AE/AO might also help.

New Microsoft advisory will detail Chromium security updates for the new Edge browser

Microsoft has released a new security advisory support document that will provide users a record of all security updates for its Chromium-powered web browser that was released last month. Users of Microsoft’s new browser will be able to keep track of security batches, and see how fast vulnerabilities are patched especially when compared to its rival Google Chrome.

The advisory only lists one entry as of the time of this writing, listing four vulnerabilities identified by CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposured) which were patched on January 17. The listing documents the specific version of Edge that fixed the vulnerabilities (79.9.309.68), which is based on the Chromium version 79.0.3945.130.

Microsoft Edge Version Date Released Based on Chromium Version CVE
79.0.309.68 1/17/2020 79.0.3945.130 CVE-2020-6378, CVE-2020-6379, CVE-2020-6380, CVE-2020-0601

As noted by ComputerWorld, Google released the same patch for Chromium on January 16, which is just one day before Edge received the same treatment from Microsoft, possibly suggesting that Redmond giant is looking to keep the gab between Chromium and Edge updates as slim as possible. Google’s update listing mentions eleven vulnerabilities that were patched, identifying only four of them by CVE. The CVE numbers listed also matched that of the Edge listing.

Still, Google has just released Chrome 80.0.3987.87, which provides as many as 56 vulnerability patches, 37 of which are CVE-identified. Microsoft still has yet to update Edge to the same version, although the company has made a commitment to provide regular updates to its Edge Stable branch every six weeks.

Are you confident in the security of the new Chromium-based Edge? Feel free to leave your thoughts about Microsoft’s new browser below.

How to chat with Skype in Office for the web

If you’re working on a file using the Office web apps, then you have a collaboration feature that you might not know about. Whenever someone is editing a document alongside you in Office for the web, in either Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote, you’re able to have a chat with them in Skype. This lets you settle issues with the document, followup with them, and more. Here’s how you can use it.

Where to find the Skype chat button

To chat with Skype in the Office Web Apps, you’ll first want to make sure that you’ve shared a link to your file. You can share a link to a file by opening the File Menu, clicking Share on the left side, and clicking where it says Share with People. Change the permissions to Anyone with the link can edit and then click Copy Link.

Once the link is shared, you should see an icon that shows you that someone is editing with you in Office for the web. It will show up in a similar way to the picture above. Once ready to chat, click the blue Chat icon to open the chat pane. You’ll then be able to type in the text box at the bottom of the pane to have a conversation.

Taking the Chat on the Go

When using Skype on your phone or from the web, you’ll be able to continue the chat, even if away from your document.  According to Microsoft, the chat should carry over to your list of Skype chats, with the name of the file showing up as the name of the chat. However, if you’re editing with people who don’t have an Office 365 subscription, they won’t have a chat pane in the document when they’re in Office for the web.

Just one way to collaborate

Chatting with Skype in the Office Web Apps is just one way to collaborate with your coworkers. Another great way is to try out Microsoft Teams, which we’ve previously covered here. We’ve also got other helpful guides and how-to’s around Office 365 as well, so feel free to check it out. And, remember to drop us a comment below letting us know how you collaborate in Office 365.

Fix: The calendar folder cannot be found

Those that are part of a work environment probably know the Microsoft Office Suite by heart, and all of its components. Since group work involves communication, Microsoft Office even included a program that acts as a personal information manager and email client.

This program is called Microsoft Outlook, and as of now, it is one of the most popular and most used collaborative tools in existence.

quick steps issues

However, Outlook is still software, and software can have occasional bugs. For example, users have been reporting an error message when trying to use Quick Step:

Because of the issues, Outlook users can no longer use Quick Step to do the following:

  • Create a task with attachment
  • Create a task with text of a message
  • Cre ate an appointment with attachment
  • Create an appointment with the text of a message

How do I fix these Quick Step issues?

1. Make sure the primary account’s settings are right

One thing you need to understand about the issue is what is causing it.  As you may know, Outlook does not synchronize the Calendar or Tasks folder with the server for IMAP or POP accounts.

Because of that, if the primary account is configured as an IMAP or POP email account, a Calendar or Tasks folder is created locally. This makes it so that these features can still be used within Outlook.

The only problem with this feature is that non-primary IMAP or POP accounts don’t have these folders created, and any attempt to interact with these folders by using Quick Steps will generate this error.

As such, your best bet to avoid this problem is to not configure the primary account as an IMAP or POP email account

2. Update Windows to the latest version

Many users reported that this issue came along right after they performed a system update. As such, try updating your Windows 10 PC to the latest version.

  1. Press Startoutlookoutloo
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select Update & Security
  4. In the Windows Update menu, select Check for updates
    • If an update is already pending for install, the button will be labeled Download now
  5. Perform the update
  6. Reboot your PCwindows update

3. Use Tasks instead of Quick Step

This is more of a workaround, but it is very similar to Quick Step in that it saves you some time.

  1. Click the Move icon in Home toolbar
  2. Then you have the choice to select Tasks
  3. Click and your email is converted(moved) to a task and deleted from the inbox
tasks instead of quick step

This procedure also works for moving emails to your calendar and is very similar to using Quick-Step.

4. Use a different email client

While Outlook is indeed very popular, that doesn’t mean that it is also the best. If you still can’t get the Quick Steps feature to work, maybe you should consider using a different email client.

We recommend trying reliable third-party software that supports IMAP and allows you to manage your emails, files, and tools with ease – from one inbox.

Email client programs have powerful capabilities that connect to your Outlook server with a few clicks and put at your disposal additional tools to enhance your productivity.

By following these steps and workarounds, you should no longer see any missing calendar error message in Outlook.

If you’re aware of another way to solve this problem, share it in the comments section below so that other users can try it, as well.

Fix common Hyper-V replication errors on Windows 10/11

There are two types of error codes that can be produced by any software – a known error message (if the event is caused by a specific known reason), or a generic error message (if the event is caused by an unknown issue).

No matter what the details of the situation are, it is very useful to have either a known or a generic error code. This will allow you to perform troubleshooting and try to stop this behavior.

The Hyper-V Replica was designed to work the same way. In today’s article, we will explore some of the most commonly known and also generic error messages, that relate to the replication process of Hyper-V. Read on to find out more.

How to deal with the common replication errors in Hyper-V

1. Hyper-V prevented starting virtual machine because it is prepared for failover

error prevented starting virtual machine because - hyper-v replication errors

This error message classifies as a known error message. It is a message caused by the VM on which the Planned failover was started being turned off at the Primary Server, and turned on at the replicated server.

The only situation in which the VM is turned on at the Primary Server is if replication is not working properly. Because virtual machines can not be turned on at the Primary server, this error can be ignored without any concerns.

2. Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on Replica Server for virtual machine <VM Name>not in a state to accept replication - Hyper-V replication errors

When the replication process is completed and you click the Finish button inside the Hyper-V setup wizard, the main server creates a rule (GUID) for the Replica Server which will allow the software to check for any duplicated Virtual Machines.

The error is produced if the VM finds another virtual machine already configured with the same GUID.

Can you run VirtualBox with Hyper-V on Windows 10 v1903? Here’s the answer

3. Failed to perform the operation. Hyper-V is not in a valid replication state to perform the operationnot in valid replication state to perform operation - Hyper-V replication errors

This error occurs if there is any maintenance done at the Primary Server while you are completing the Replication Wizard.

There are two main possible reasons for this issue:

  • Your Primary Server is not configured to be a Replica Server (to fix it you will need to configure the server properly)
  • Your firewall service is blocking the access of Hyper-V on Replication Server (to fix it you will need to whitelist the Hyper-V app on the Replication Server)

4. Hyper-V Failed to resolve the Replica Server namefailed to resolve the replica server name - Hyper-V replication errors

This error is caused either by a problem with the name you set for the server or if you used an IP Address or NetBIOS name instead of using an FQDN format. Changing the name or format will fix the issue.

Conclusion

In today’s article, we explored some of the most commonly known and generic Hyper-V replication error messages.

We hope this guide offered you a comprehensive overview of the issues that can create these errors.

Fix: CPU doesn’t reach Turbo Speed

One good way to see if your PC is up to speed is by performing a stress test. This will basically overload your system components so that you can monitor and see what are the limits, while still being in a safe zone.

This is somewhat similar to overclocking, only that you never actually go beyond the component’s maximum designed capabilities.

As far as processors go, they usually have a normal running speed and a Turbo Speed that is usually a bit higher but still low enough to be used longer periods of time without any danger.

However, some users reported that their PCs are incapable of reaching Turbo Speed, or at least that is what their monitoring software is telling them:

Hi guys, just installed my new i5 7400. I just did a stress test, temperatures never goes past 61, everything else looks ok. In the bios it says turbo targeted speed is 3500, but my cpu never goes past 3.3?Do you guys have any idea why this is happening?

The explanation is pretty simple, and since it is something many of you will run into anyway, we’ve created this guide to show you exactly what needs to be done.

How do I make my CPU reach Turbo Speed?cpu no intel turbo boost

One of the reasons you do a stress test is to see what your PC is capable of. If you see that your CPU is not reaching the Turbo Speed that it boasts having, try performing a stress test on each individual core at a time.

Note: the Turbo Speed values are usually for each individual core, and not the collective power of the CPU. In fact, stress testing will often result in lower values than the Turbo Speed or even the normal speed.

Need a good stress-test program? Check out this article for our top picks.

That being the case, simply use whatever stress test or overclocking software you have and set it to test each individual core at a time.

The reasoning behind this is because individual cores are actually the ones that need to be faster, because of the single-threaded devices that use them.

Multi-threaded devices can run using multiple slower cores without much difference. However, single-threaded devices need powerful singular cores to be fast and responsive.

Conclusion

Whenever you buy a computer, no matter how cheap it may be, it is still a serious investment. That being the case, if you do go for a mid-range or high-end PC, you should at least know you are getting your money’s worth.

So, if you see that the stress test reveals sub-par results, simply go for a single-core stress test and you will most likely see the expected results.

Save as Dialog Box Not Showing? 4 Ways to Fix it

You struggled for a few minutes to make the Save as dialog box appear in Windows 10, but it’s still not showing. Chances are you’ve accidentally unchecked the Always ask before opening this type of file in the file download dialog box.

Well, when you first download a file, this file download prompt should open up. If you happen to clear the checkbox, your choice will be automatically made every time you download the same type of file, and the prompt will no longer be displayed.

Besides, this preference is saved in the user part of the registry. Also, the configuration is stored in a separate registry value for each file type. If the Save as dialog box is not showing in AutoCAD or Photoshop, keep reading to find out the solutions!

What can I do if the Save as dialog box is not showing?

1. Reset the dialog box to default

  1. Press Windows + R to open Run, type cmd, and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
  2. Click Yes in the UAC prompt.
  3. Paste the following command and hit Enter:reg delete "HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellAttachmentExecute{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}" /va /fcommand to fix save as dialog box not showing

If you have disabled Always ask before opening this type of file during previous file downloads, then run this quick command to fix things if the Save as dialog box is not showing. You should then see the file download prompt each time you download that type of file.

2. Enable Automatic prompting for file downloads

  1. Launch Internet Explorer, and click the gear icon to open Tools.
  2. Go to Internet Options, and navigate to the Security tab.
  3. Here you’ll find four security zones listed:
    1. Internet
    2. Local Intranet
    3. Trusted sites
    4. Restricted sitesinternet options
  4. Click the zone where you want to change the settings.

  5. If your wish is to reset Internet Explorer without deleting personal information, simply tap Reset.
  6. You can also check the option to Delete Personal Information.
  7. Finally, click on Close in the confirmation dialogue box.

Once done, verify whether the Save as dialog box is still not showing in Windows. If that’s the case, head to the last solution.

4. Perform a clean boot environment

  1. Press Windows + R to open Run, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to the Services tab, tick the checkbox next to Hide all Microsoft services, and then click on Disable all.disable serivces
  3. Go to the Startup tab, and click on Open Task Manager.
  4. For each startup item, select it and click Disable.
  5. Close Task Manager.
  6. Click OK in the System Configuration window.
  7. Finally, restart your computer.

If this fails to resolve the issue, you can also try performing a clean boot of Windows 10. You just need to be signed in as an administrator on your PC to access these settings.

Note that your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when performing a clean boot. However, when you start it normally, the functionality returns.

By now, you should have the Save as dialog box in Windows if it didn’t earlier.

Before you leave, find out how to increase the Internet speed and get quicker downloads.

KB4532695 Reported Issues: BSoDs, sound problems, and more

For those of you that are constantly updating their Windows PC, you probably already know about KB4532695. This cumulative build was released the second round of updates of the year 2020 just two weeks after Patch Tuesday.

It is available for Windows 10 version 1903 and Windows 10 version 1909 and it is mostly composed of fixes.

However, Microsoft simply did a patchwork, since, for every issue they fixed, another one would emerge.

Common bugs and issues in KB4532695

1. Outlook mailboxes disappear after installing KB4532695outlook banner

Users reported that once they installed KB4532695 , all of their Outlook mailboxes would disappear from the Windows Mail client, while all the other mailboxes would be unaffected.

Unfortunately, the only fix to this problem is either uninstalling the update, Using Outlook for the Outlook mailboxes, or going to Outlook.com on your web browser.

For more information on the matter, check out this article we’ve written back when the update was just launched.

2. File Explorer still doesn’t work as intended

While this particular cumulative update did primarily address the File Explorer issue that has been plaguing users for months, it still didn’t manage to make it work perfectly.

For example, users stated that:

For example, it takes two clicks at times to reset the caret position, stopping you dead in your tracks.

While uninstalling the update would be the firs thing you would like to try, remember that thiswould just bring back the more severe File Explorer issues mentioned earlier.

3. KB4532695 fails to install properly

Users reported that when they tried updating using KB4532695 that it would fail once it reached 100%, showing an error code 0x80070490.

If you too have encountered this issue, check out this step-by-step guide for a solution to your problem.

4. Bluescreens of DeathKB4532695 bsod

Probably the worst error one can get on a Windows PC, it seems that Bluescreens of Death are also a package deal when installing KB4532695.

If you too have this issue, your only option is to boot your PC in Safe Mode and uninstall the update from there.

5. Display driver issues

Many users complained that installing the latest cumulative update would leave them without any sound:

This installed and now i do not have any sound. I have two different sources. HDMI cable and soundcard. neither works now. In device manager and sound settings is all good, no issues. just no sound. I have not changed anything, just updated windows and now no sound!!

Additionally, others reported that their display drivers were affected since they could no longer use the Extended Display feature.

6. Issues with launching games

Probably related to the display driver issue, some users experience problems when trying to launch games, as they would either just get a black loading screen or no response at all.

However, once they removed the update, everything seemed to work fine again.

7. Slow boot times

Some Windows customers reported that after installing KB4532695 their boot times dramatically slowed down.

Installed this in an Intel NUC8i3BEH and encountered very slow boot times. Windows would get stuck at splash or welcome screen for around 5 minutes.

As with all the other issues, only uninstalling the update can fix the problem.

These are the most important issues that have been reported with KB4532695. The list is quite extensive and the fact that it was meant to be more of a bugfix update makes things all the more ironic.

Whichever the case, Microsoft should listen to their users’ outcry and try and solve as many of the issues as possible, since the February Patch Tuesday updates are just around the corner.

Windows 10 2004 lets you uninstall Paint, WordPad and NotePad

For as long as Windows existed as an OS aimed for the masses, there have been a few programs over the years that have become a staple, and these include Notepad, Paint, and WordPad.

Unlike other programs that come pre-installed with Windows (Windows 10 included), these ones are enabled by default, and could not be uninstalled or removed.

While they never did occupy much space, they were nevertheless branded as bloatware. This is especially since third-party applications starting emerging, more precisely those that are better and free as well.

As such, Microsoft seems to be heading towards a future where this “holy Trinity” of bloatware may become removable.

Notepad, Paint, and WordPad will become optional

Windows 10 20H1, also known as version 2004, will introduce multiple new features and under the hood improvements to the operating system. However, one of the highlights of this latest build is the ability to uninstall Notepad, Paint, and WordPad completely.

Many Windows 10 optional features are enabled by default and can be disabled through the Settings application in Windows 10.

In order to do so, you’ll just need to open the Optional features page via the Settings app. This will let you manage certain business apps or features such as OpenSSH Server or WMI SNMP Provider.

With this change, the list will soon be populated by even more entries.

ms paint optional features

You won’t be able to completely remove Notepad, Paint, and WordPad

Once the update hits live and the programs become optional, you can disable them just like any other service.

However, keep in mind that this will not completely remove them from your PC, it will just remove them from the Start Menu, and you won’t be able to launch it via the Run console.

This change of events should come as no surprise since talks about the future of these products have been long-standing. There was even a point when Microsoft considered removing Paint altogether from the OS and making it a Store App.

Whichever the case, this news does not mean that the programs will no longer be included in future updates. Windows 10’s 20H1 update is almost finished and Microsoft is expected to launch it for mainstream use in April or May.

What do you think will happen now that Notepad, Paint, and WordPad are optional? Share your thoughts in the comments section below and we’ll continue the talk.

How to check your BIOS boot time in Windows 10 (and what it means)

Windows 10’s Task Manager (first shipped with Windows 8) includes the ability to view the “last BIOS time” of your system. To see it, first launch Task Manager from the Start menu or the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keyboard shortcut. Next, click the “Startup” tab.

You’ll see your “last BIOS time” in the top-right of the interface. The time is displayed in seconds and will vary between systems. A blank space means your motherboard’s firmware doesn’t expose this information, so Windows can’t display it.

This figure isn’t directly related to the Windows boot time. Instead, it refers to the time that elapsed while your motherboard’s firmware completed hardware initialisation. The timer stops when Windows begins booting.

Last BIOS time in Windows 10's Task Manager

Most modern hardware will display a last BIOS time somewhere between 3 and 10 seconds, although this can vary significantly depending on the options set in your motherboard’s firmware.

A good place to start when lowering last BIOS time is to look for a “fast boot” option in your motherboard’s UEFI. Turning it on can significantly improve boot speeds. You could also try disabling any artificial startup delays which might be activated, such as an enforced delay while the manufacturer’s logo is shown.

You should be able to find information about your device’s UEFI firmware options in the manual or on the manufacturer’s website. In some cases, simply upgrading the firmware may be enough to resolve hardware issues and improve startup speed.

Hands on with the Surface Duo-like multitasking features in the Outlook app on iPadOS

Microsoft recently released an update for the Outlook app on iOS, and it delivered new support for the multitasking features in iPadOS 13. The features are a bit reminiscent of the experience showcased with the Surface Duo back in October of 2019. Users are able to leverage iPadOS’ Split View, Slide Over, and even run multiple instances of Outlook side by side.  Here’s a hands-on look at the experience.

Split View mode for multitasking with Outlook

If you’ve used Outlook on Windows, you’re likley familiar with the Windows 10 split-screen mode. You’re able to stack Outlook side-by-side with any other app you have open. Well, with Outlook’s support for Split View in iPadOS 13, you can now finally do the same on an iPad too.

In our example, we opened up the Outlook app while browsing through OnMSFT on Safari. This is done by swiping up to reveal the iPadOS dock, and then pulling the icon for Outlook up to the side of the screen you want to see it open on. It’s a pretty nifty experience, and when trying it out, it feels like your iPad has two screens, rather than one. You’re able to keep browsing through the web, text messages, or other content while still checking your messages or calendar on Outlook. This is definitely a nice way to boost your productivity and it feels a bit similar to how users would be able to stack apps side by side on Surface Duo’s two screens.

Slide Over mode for opening Outlook on top of another app

Another feature now available in Outlook on iPadOS is the support for Slide Over. With this element, you’re able to open Outlook on top of a full-screen app. Again, it’s done by pulling up on the dock in iPadOS and pulling the Outlook icon out and on top of whatever window you have open. It’s a pretty neat experience, as Outlook “pops” out in a similar size to an iPhone app, and will float over what window you have open. In our case, that’s Microsoft Edge. You’re able to peek at your email or calendar, while still browsing the web, or working inside a primary app. It feels similar to how users would be able to send apps from one screen to the next on a Surface Duo. Another boost for productivity.

Multiple Windows of Outlook simultaneously

Next up, there’s the ability to use multiple instances of Outlook simultaneously. We tried it out by opening up the Outlook Calendar alongside the emails in Outlook. It works just like the other features. Simply pull up on the iPadOS dock, and pull the icon for Outlook up to the side of the screen you want it on. This feature was pretty nifty too. We were able to use it to see two separate email accounts side by side. This can be plenty useful for those who have multiple accounts in Outlook and want to see them simultaneously.

Drag-and-drop support

Finally, there is support for drag and drop. With this feature, you’re able to highlight and drag text from another app and into the Outlook app. It’s a nice feature and really reminds us of the Surface Duo’s ability to drag stuff from one screen to the next. In our example, we opened up an article and dragged the text from an article in Microsoft Edge and into an email in Outlook. This also works for photos too, and its a great way to save time when looking to move stuff from one app to another.

A preview of Surface Duo?

Of course, all of these cool multitasking abilities are not designed by Microsoft. The features are all part of Apple’s iPadOS operating system, though credit goes to Microsoft for taking advantage of them. Apple’s own apps have supported these abilities for a while, and it’s great to see Microsoft now getting in with it too. Microsoft has its own dual-screen smartphone, the Surface Duo coming soon, and a lot of these features in iPadOS seem to have inspired Microsoft’s visions.

Final Fantasy XV, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and Death Squared are coming to Xbox Game Pass for console

Microsoft has just announced three new games coming to Xbox Game Pass for console in February, starting tomorrow (February 6) with Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Final Fantasy XV. The first one is joining Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus in the catalog, while the latter is the first of many Final Fantasy RPG games coming to Xbox Game Pass over the course of 2020.

Bethesda and Square Enix are some of Microsoft’s biggest partners for Xbox Game Pass, and both publishers have apparently agreed to add their latest titles to the game subscription service pretty quickly. As you may know, Wolfenstein: Youngblood was released on Xbox One back in November, though this game didn’t get the same level of critical acclaim as its predecessors. As for Square Enix games, Life is Strange 2 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (the latter is leaving Xbox Game Pass this month) are two examples of high-profile games that joined Xbox Game Pass just a couple of months after their release.

A third new title will join Xbox Game Pass for console on February 11, the puzzle game Death Squared. This one may not be that new for some of you as it was actually one of the Games with Gold titles for July 2018. This isn’t the only game in the Xbox Game Pass catalog that was previously offered with the Games with Gold program, but with more than 200 games available for just $9.99/month, Xbox Game Pass definitely remains great value for Xbox One gamers.

CPU Temp is Not Showing in MSI Afterburner [Fix]

Many reported that CPU temp is not showing in MSI Afterburner, and that can be a problem while overclocking.

It can lead to your Windows PC overheating, and in some cases a permanent damage to your hardware, therefore it’s important to fix the problem.

In today’s guide we’re going to show you the best ways to fix this problem once and for all.

Why can’t I see CPU temp on MSI Afterburner?

  • You’re using outdated version of Afterburner. Older versions don’t have the option to show CPU temperature.

How do I show CPU temp in MSI Afterburner?

Use the latest version of Afterburner

  1. Download MSI Afterburner.
  2. Install the the software and start it.
  3. Go to your taskbar’s info area taskbar.
  4. Click on the MSI Afterburner icon.
  5. Click on the Settings cog in MSI Afterburner.
  6. Go to the Monitoring tab.
  7. Scroll down until you see CPU temperature on the listmsi afterburner cpu temp
  8. Click on it and then check the box that says Show in On-Screen Display.
  9. Go to the On-Screen Display.
  10. Specify a keyboard shortcut to be used for the On-Screen Display.
  11. Launch your game, press your keyboard shortcut, and you can always check your CPU temps.

By following these steps, you should be able to now see your CPU temperatures regardless of whether you manually check form the taskbar, or if you are in-game in full-screen mode.

By following these steps, you should now be able to monitor your CPU temperatures regardless of whatever it is you are doing. Since gaming sessions on overclocked PC’s can get extremely hot, knowing the temperature in real-time can be crucial in the long run for your hardware.

This isn’t the only issue, and many reported that MSI Afterburner is not showing GPU temperature, but we covered that issue in a separate guide.

If you found this article useful and would like to read more about MSI Afterburner, let us know in the comments section below.

Fix: The folder cannot be expanded in Outlook

Microsoft’s Outlook is one of the most commonly-used personal information managers and email clients currently available. This makes it all the more difficult when issues appear since there is a very big chance that a large number of users are being affected.

Microsoft and Dell among companies tapped by the White House to build Huawei 5G network competitor

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, officials in Washington are looking to circumvent a China-led push to 5G infrastructure by scrambling some of the best and biggest North American based tech companies to create alternative software and hardware 5G telecommunications technologies and networks.

As the Journal puts it, after speaking to White House Officials on the matter,

The plan would build on efforts by some U.S. telecom and technology companies to agree on common engineering standards that would allow 5G software developers to run code atop machines that come from nearly any hardware manufacturer. That would reduce, if not eliminate, reliance on Huawei equipment.

Companies including Microsoft Corp., Dell Inc. and AT&T Inc. are part of the effort, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said.

The big-picture concept is to have all of the U.S. 5G architecture and infrastructure done by American firms, principally,” Mr. Kudlow said in an interview. “That also could include Nokia and Ericsson because they have big U.S. presences.”

While most nations would like to own their 5G networks full stop, the reality is that in an interconnected global community, some nations have a headstart in development and often share their progress through partnerships, collaborations or sales, and current US trade foe, Huawei Technologies Co, happens to be part of a nation sitting atop the 5G hill.

More specifically, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow is depending on companies such as Dell and Microsoft to “rapidly develop software and cloud capabilities,” to not only replace Huawei licensed technologies, but also unseat the dominant place the China-based company currently retains.

In addition to positive mindshare, Huawei will remain a tough competitor to the US companies working on 5G networks as the Chinese giant has been heavily investing in the standard. If the US cannot find a way to workaround Huawei’s “intellectual property,” they may end up playing catch up for one to two years with Huawei and its partners.

The problem is you’re starting late in the game to fix this problem,” Mr. Triolo said of the U.S. effort. He added that the initiative could also threaten Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson by making their machines a commodity, Mr. Triolo said.

Moving into the second year of an ongoing trade war, the US continues to vilify Huawei by levying security concerns as a reason to halt business between North American companies and the China-based software and hardware provider. However, US partners such as the UK are no longer following suit in their banishment of Huawei technologies over concerns about the company having direct ties to the Chinese military. Instead, as of last week, the UK has agreed to allow Huawei to build part of the country’s 5G network.

The UK’s agreement to partner with Huawei on its new 5G infrastructure is now being met with a resolution formed by House Republicans condemning the nation’s acceptance of advance network help from Huawei. As with most partisan efforts as of late, the new resolution includes top Republican official sponsors including Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex), Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla), Rep Michael Turner (R-Ohio), Rep Mike Gallaher (R-Wash), and Rep Lix Chene, who all expressed how “extremely disappointed” they were in the UK’s decision to forgo the White House’s imposed trading ban with Huawei.

The US’ concerns over a potential Huawei dominance in the subsequent IoT markets 5G enables isn’t limited to one political party in North America: A bipartisan gathering of senators are looking to recirculating funds from the Federal Trade Communications Commissions spectrum license auctions to stimulate 5G open standards research and development through a series of grants. Other options that were up for consideration include the White House subsidizing hardware efforts from would-be Huawei competitors while Dell, Microsoft and the rest attempt to build out a 5G infrastructure.

As it stands, shifting proceeds from the FTC auctions is only a proposition and the White House is only reviewing the options with no clear indication of acting on it anytime soon, instead opting to apply continued pressure to allies and remaining partners to ban Huawei technologies. There has been no official word from Dell or Microsoft on the matter and the White House has yet to unveil its final plan going forward for a Huawei-free 5G network.

Xbox Game Pass quests are being revamped with more chances to earn Microsoft Rewards points

Microsoft announced today that it’s revamping Xbox Game Pass quests on Xbox One to give gamers even more opportunities to earn Microsoft Rewards points. With the new system, there will be daily, weekly, and monthly quests, with some quests also being exclusive for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members.

“We heard your feedback about improving Quests and making this a better experience while gaming, so you can now play any Xbox Game Pass console game to earn points. We’ll still have Quests around specific games, so Quests will continue to be a great way for you to discover games you may not have tried yet. You will also get notified in real time when you complete a Quest,” the Xbox team explained today.

Until now, Xbox Game Pass quests required you to unlock a specific number of achievements in select games to unlock some Microsoft Rewards points. Following today’s update, quests are becoming more complex and some of them will require completing specific tasks in games. Here is the list of daily, weekly, and monthly Xbox Game Pass quests that will be available until March 2:

Xbox Series X will reportedly support expandable storage via mystery dedicated port

Less than a couple weeks ago, a peek at the ports on the upcoming Xbox Series X were leaked online. The photo showed most of the same ports as on the Xbox One series of consoles—two USB-A, only one HDMI, an ethernet, an audio, and power.

Besides these ports, the photo also showed a long rectangular one that sits in the middle between the HDMI and audio ports. As it turns out, the port seems to be a storage expansion slot, according to sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans (via Thurrott).

Providing easy access to storage expansion makes a lot of sense, especially as the Series X’s 4K ultra HD capable hardware will likely equate to much larger game sizes. The technology behind the expandable storage is still unknown—the hope is that it can provide a balance of high storage capacity as well as speedy read access.

Microsoft has also included options to expand storage in its latest Surface Devices—the Laptop 3 and Pro X. Although unlike that of the Xbox Series X, expanding the storage in these Surface devices requires a total replacement of the included SSD, as opposed to inserting an additional drive.

It’s important to keep in mind that, as can be seen in the photo, that the device is only a prototype at this point. Until its release in the holiday season later this year, Microsoft can continue to tweak the device as it sees fit, including adding/removing any of the ports shown above.

What do you think about a storage expansion slot of the Xbox Series X? Let us know in the comments area below.

Sony is waiting for more Xbox Series X details to adjust PlayStation 5’s pricing

Sony announced its FY2019 Q3 results yesterday for the three months period ending on December 31, 2019, and unlike Microsoft, the company isn’t shying away from revealing hard data about its PlayStation business. Even though Sony only sold 6.1M PlayStation 4 units during the holiday season (down 2M YoY), PS4 cumulative sales have reached 108.9M units, and PS Plus subscribers also reached a record 38.8M subscribers.

“We aim to leverage this large community and network services revenue stream to affect a smooth transition from the current console generation to the next, unlike in the past when profitability deteriorated significantly due to development and marketing costs,” Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki explained during its earning calls. When asked to share more about Sony’s plans for a “smooth transition” to next-gen consoles, Totoki said that PlayStation 5 pricing is still up in the air, and hinted that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X should be the main factor of adjustment.

Here’s Tokoti full statement translated by Video Games Chronicle (via IGN):

“First, we must absolutely control the labour cost, the personnel cost, it must be controlled,” Totoki said. “And the initial ramp up, how much can we prepare initially, we will work on the production and the sales and we will have to prepare the right volume as we launch this.

“What is not very clear or visible is because we are competing in the space, so it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time, and depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay.

“So it’s a question of balance,” Totoki continued, “and because it’s a balancing act it’s very difficult to say anything concrete at this point of time, but when I said smooth transition, we mean that we will definitely choose the optimal approach and that we will try to have the best balance so that we will be profitable in the life, during the life of this product.”

If Microsoft was first to reveal the design of the next-gen Xbox, the company has yet to reveal the full specs and pricing details for Xbox Series X. The software giant is also rumored to be working on a cheaper “Lockhart” SKU, but the existence of this second device is still unconfirmed.

Back in 2013, Sony’s PlayStation 4 easily took the advantage over Microsoft’s Xbox One which was $100 more expensive with its bundled Kinect, and also slightly less powerful than the PS4. Things apparently got so bad that Microsoft quickly stopped sharing Xbox One sales numbers.

Thanks to its 100+ million PS4 install base and ecosystem lock-in, Sony may still be able to become the market leader during the next console generation, even if Microsoft is able to match the pricing of the PS5. Even though the console wars are still very much a thing, Microsoft is now looking beyond pure console sales and working to bring the Xbox ecosystem to more devices with Project xCloud. “The business isn’t how many consoles you sell. The business is how many players are playing the games that they buy, how they play,” Xbox head Phil Spencer explained in an interview with The Verge last year.

Clippy might be dead, but the Office 365 Microsoft Search box is even more helpful

Do you remember Clippy? The anthropomorphic paperclip-shaped assistant once was a key feature in Microsoft’s Office suite of products and often helped users with suggestions about writing letters, and more.

While Clippy has long been dead, Microsoft in most recent times replaced him with a feature in Office 2016 known as “Tell Me.” Or, if you’re up and running with the latest version of Office 365 and Office 2019, a feature known as the Microsoft Search Box. In this Office 365 guide, we’ll be taking a look at what the Microsoft Search Box can do for you.

A quick explanation about the Microsoft Search box

The Microsoft Search Box is universal across Office 365 apps like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. It lives at the top of the ribbon and is out of your way. That’s much different from Clippy, who was known to show up in the most inconvenient times.  Anyway, there are more than a few things that the Microsoft Search box can help you do. It’s designed so you can enter words or phrases about what you want to do next, and will help you get to those features. You can even save time summon it with the Alt+Q buttons on your keyboard.

Features of the Microsoft Search box in Office 365

When you click the Microsoft Search box, search will remember what you last asked it to do. It also might suggest actions that you might want to take based on what you’re working on. Additionally, if you’re up and running with a business version of Office 365, you’ll also see a list of people that you collaborate with, and files that you’ve recently worked on in this search box as well. Lastly, if you’re lost and you’re not sure where to find a specific functionality of the Office 365 app you’re in, the search box can help you find what you’re looking for.

The Microsoft Search box is also smart enough to help you find a definition of a word. Simply type the word into the Microsoft Search box, and Bing will tell you what it means. But, if you’re looking for expanded results, you also can always click the definition and open the search pane to see more details on Bing.

This pane will have tabs for Knowledge, Files, Web, and Pictures. Knowledge will give you a definition or more information about a topic. Files will search through the files in your organization for the word you searched for. Web will show you a list of web results. Pictures, meanwhile, will run a Bing image search for your query.

Just the start of what Office 365 can do for you

The Microsoft Search box is just one of the many features of how Office 365 can help you out. So far, in our coverage, we’ve highlighted how you can use it in your small business, stay healthy at work, and even improve your workflow. Keep it tuned to OnMSFT for all your Office 365 news and information, and feel free to let us know if you’ve ever used Microsoft Search in Office 365 by dropping us a comment below.

FIX: Laptop not locking when the lid is closed

Are you used to simply close the lid on your laptop and leave your office for a snack? Do you have a favorite coffee shop where you work from, but the best bagels are sold across the street? Or do you simply need to use the toilet? You might be used to close the lid and be on your way. But wait! Danger lurks in unexpected shapes and sizes! Anyone can reopen that lid and access your laptop, unless you lock it.

Do you work from home and need to make sure that your toddler does not send a mangled email to the whole organization while you fix yourself a snack? Do you have a prank-prone team around your desk, like I do?

Then you need to make sure your laptop does lock when you close the lid, and this can be an issue, especially for some Windows 10 users.

Follow these simple steps to identify the root of your problem and fix it.

FIX: Laptop not locking when closed

First, you need to check the default settings that establish what happens when you close the lid. Follow these steps to modify the System Settings:

1. Modify the Power Options

  1. Access System Settings > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.power options control panel
  2. Notice you can change the predefined actions of the power buttons. On the Change what closing the lid does drop-down menu, choose Sleep or Hibernate.

If your laptop is still unlocked when it wakes up from sleep, you should make sure you have the right Sign-in options enabled. Here is how to do that:

2. Modify the Sign-in options

  1. Press the Windows key and X, to bring up the side menu.
  2. From the side menu, choose Settings.
  3. On Windows Settings, choose Accounts > Sign-in options.
  4. Set the laptop to require sign-in when it recovers from sleep, using the options from the drop-down menu.

3. Edit the Screen Saver options

If the above steps did not help, have a look at your screen saving settings:

  1. From Windows Settings, choose Personalization.
  2. On the Personalization window left-hand menu, choose Lock screen.
  3. Scroll down to bottom of the Lock screen window and click Screen Saver settings.screen saver settings windows 10
  4. On the Screen Saver Settings window, make sure this checkbox is enabled: On resume, display logon screen.

screen saver settings screenshot

4. Run the Troubleshooter

Sometimes you need a thorough system check and that’s when the Windows built-in troubleshooter comes in handy. Here is how to access it:

  1. In the Windows search menu, type Troubleshooter to bring up the System Settings > Troubleshooter menu.

    power troubleshooting windows 10

  2. On the Troubleshooter menu, select Power, then click Run the troubleshooter.

What if I just want the laptop to lock?

Windows 10 has had mixed reports about its abilities to recover from sleep. What if you simply want to lock the laptop when closing the lid, without entering a Sleep or Hibernate state?

There is a third party software that can help with that, called Lid Lock. It is free to use and although the original developer website location is currently unavailable, you have a safe download source on Softpedia.

After you install the tool, you can access it from System Tray. As long as you make sure Lid Lock loads at the same time with Windows, you don’t need to further configure it.

Why your SharePoint user profile doesn’t sync with AD

SharePoint is a collaborative software tool that is part of the Microsoft Office Suite. As a collaborative tool, user connections are to be expected. Once added, you will also need to update, import and sync their information accordingly to stay updated.

There are plenty of methods one can use to add, import or sync users into SharePoint, but the fastest and simplest way is through the use of Active Directory (AD).

It can be used as an alternative to using Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM) to import user profile data from Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) in your domain.

One limitation is that AD import only works with Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and does not work with other directory services. More so, if you use AD Import, MIM or other external identity managers are not available for connections to other data sources such as business applications.

Despite being the fasted sync and import method, Active Directory does have a few situations when it won’t do its job properly.

Why won’t my SharePoint user profile sync with AD?

sharepoint sync user profile

Here is a list of when and why Active Directory Sync and import may not work:

Things to know about Active Directory

  • Referential integrity among users and groups is only maintained within a single Active Directory forest
  • The AD import option lets you configure and use only a single, farm-wide property mapping

Things that Active Directory cannot do

  • The AD import option does not:
    • Automatically synchronize photos from Active Directory to SharePoint Server 2016
    • Filter user interface to create complex Boolean expressions
    • Provide object filtering based on object property values
    • Ensure single-master of each object property
    • Perform per-tenant property mapping
    • Provide Logon and Resource Forest support
      • That is, custom joins of data from multiple sources

Looking for an alternative to SharePoint? Check out this article for some alternatives

Scenarios that Active Directory does not allow

  • The AD import option does not support:
    • Generic (non-AD) LDAP sources
    • Source Schema Discovery
    • Business Connectivity Services Import
    • Property mappings for complex types like pictures and special AD types
    • Exporting data from SharePoint to Directory Sources
    • Upgrading/Translating FIM based connections or synchronizing configuration to AD import
    • Bidirectional synchronization
      • Changes made to SharePoint user profiles will not be synchronized back to the domain controller
    • Multi-Forest scenarios such as:
      • If you have a trust between two forests, the trusted forest objects will not be imported
      • AD import does support importing users from multiple forests provided you create one synchronization connection per forest
        • As an alternative, consider using Microsoft Identity Manager

 Conclusion

By using this checklist, you should be able to avoid situations that ould otherwise prevent you from using Active Directory efficiently. However, if none of them can be avoided, remember that there are other methods of importing and syncing user profiles into SharePoint, albeit maybe more complicated.

Home Folder is not Mapping: How to Fix it

Windows File Server can be very handy when used accordingly, however, many reported that home folder is not mapping.

This can be a problem and make access to files a lot harder than it needs to be. Speaking of which, we have a great guide on how to map a network drive that you should check out.

However, there is a way to fix this problem, and in today’s guide, we will show you how to properly fix it.

Why is home folder not mapping?

  • Antivirus or its folder protection feature might be interfering with folder mapping.
  • The Fast Logon Optimization feature is enabled in Group Policy.

How do I make profile home folders map again?

1. Disable your antivirus or firewall

  1. Open your antivirus software.
  2. Disable the folder protection feature.
  3. If this feature isn’t available, disable the antivirus altogether.

Remember that disabling antivirus will jeopardize your system, so use this only for troubleshooting. To ensure your system is safe, use a reliable antivirus for Windows Server.

2. Disable the Fast Logon Optimization feature

  1. Press Windows + R and type in gpedit.msc.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration.
  3. Select Administrative Tools.
  4. Choose System.
  5. Select Logon.
  6. Double-click the Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon.
  7. Set it to Enabled.
  8. Reboot the PC.

Once the PC has rebooted, try to see if your user’s home folder encounters any more difficulties while mapping.

The fast logon feature may affect the display and drive letter assignment of a mapped network drive. As such, the drive may have been mapped, but the user on the client cannot see it in Windows Explorer.

As with the case at hand, he may even recognize it as a failed network drive mapping. This is why disabling fast logon via the Group Policy Objects is the best solution.
