Lenovo’s ‘Show Mode’ finally brings Amazon’s Echo Show display to Windows 10 PCs

Today, Lenovo announced its rollout of Alexa Show Mode support for its Windows 10 PCs. Back in January of this year during CES, Lenovo debuted its Alexa Show mode on its flagship Yoga Slim 9i laptop and set a roadmap for release in Q2 2021. Well, here we are in the first week of May and for many companies their Q2 fiscal year.

As a refresher, Alexa Show Mode will begin rolling out on Lenovo’s Yoga IdeaPad and ThinkPad lines and effectively turn those Windows 10-powered devices into Amazon Echo Show-like displays.

Alexa Show Mode

For anyone with an Amazon Echo Show, today’s rollout of supported features should seem familiar as it includes support for:

  • Ask for information on a wide range of topics
  • Play music and games
  • Set reminders and create to-do lists
  • Ask Alexa to read your favorite audiobook from Audible
  • View popular recipes
  • Watch news highlights
  • Easily control compatible smart home devices, or use Drop In to instantly check-in with approved contacts with just your voice
  • View the weather at a glance, and more

As powerful as a mouse click or keystroke, Alexa for PC lets you get more done with your PC with just your voice. Ask Alexa to play music from Amazon Music, favorite apps, and local radio and glance at song titles and album art from across the room or up close; your PC mics with far-field technology help Alexa to hear your voice commands clearly even while music is playing.

You can also set reminders and control your smart home while multitasking on your laptop. Students learning remotely can ask Alexa questions to help them with their homework. Or simply view rotating interesting updates and content such as the weather forecast for the week, things to try with Alexa, recommendations for music to listen to, and more as you move through your day.

Starting today Alexa Show Mode will be enabled on select ThinkPad and IdeaPad’s in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, India, Ireland, Austria, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Lenovo plans to support more of its Alexa-enabled PCs with Show Mode later this year.

Microsoft Teams is getting Live Transcription support for unscheduled and channel meetings

Microsoft is planning to expand the AI-powered Live Transcription feature to unscheduled and channel meetings in Teams. Indeed, the company recently added new entries to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, indicating that these updates are coming to Teams meetings in July (via Neowin).

Microsoft Teams launched the new Live Transcription with speaker attribution feature for meetings in March this year. Currently, the transcription capability is only supported on the Teams desktop app, and it is available for scheduled meetings. It identities each speaker, captures audio in near real-time and then generates a transcript of everything that’s said by the participants. The transcription can be accessed both during and after the meeting.

Next up, Microsoft Teams is adding Together Mode for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) this month. This means that users using the Teams desktop client in virtualized environments will be able to enable Together Mode during meetings. The feature uses AI to segment the face and shoulders of the participants and place them together with other people in a virtual space.

Finally, the desktop version of the app is set to receive new Power Automate templates. It will enable managers to create teams quickly with predefined channels and preinstalled apps for effective collaboration. This update will begin rolling out to all users at some point later this month.

FIX: Malware detected Windows Defender is taking action

If you just received a system pop-up from Windows Defender saying malware detected Windows Defender is taking action to clean detected malware but nothing happens, you need to make sure that everything is still secured.

A virus or malware might be causing all these problems, though, on the other hand, it might be only a compatibility issue between Windows Defender and another third-party antivirus program.

So, before taking any action you need to make sure that Windows Defender is properly running on your Windows 10 system.

How do I get rid of the Malware detected alert?

1. Use Windows Defender

The first thing you should do when encountering the Windows Defender took action against threats message is to verify its scanning history.

The default Windows antivirus might have found infected files but it is not able to properly remove them, especially when you get repeated alerts.

If the Windows Defender keeps saying threats found, then identify these files and manually remove them. You can also run the Microsoft Safety Scanner in order to extend the tool’s functionality.

  2. Type msconfig and press Enter.

  8. In the cmd box, type the following and press Enter: SFC /scannow

You can also initiate the system scan through Safe Mode – in safe mode, third-party apps and processes are disabled by default

Therefore, certain malware won’t be able to interfere with the scanning and removal process, so you can get rid of the Windows Defender taking action on threats taking too long alert.

3. Use a third-party antivirus software

If the history log isn’t showing any infected files it might be because Windows Defender detects the same virus but in different locations, and so it does not make a history entry.

However, some viruses are too clever for the basic Windows Defender. Perhaps, the software can detect suspicious activity, but it cannot remove it, so you’re stuck in a loop.

If that’s the case, you should consider choosing a different antivirus solution that can perform a more complex scan and remove anything suspicious or dangerous.

In that matter, we recommend installing security software that uses advanced AI and machine learning to find threats ranging from simple spyware and adware to Trojans.

The tool is easy to install, the UI is intuitive, and it is lightweight, so it won’t consume your system’s resources. And that’s not all. This program can also keep your sensitive information private.

It has proven its capability of detecting multiple types of malware and completely cleaning the system if you choose to do so

During the installation process, Windows Defender should be automatically disabled. If it’s not, you need to perform this operation manually:

  1. Press the Win + R keys and enter gpedit.msc.
  2. From there, navigate to Computer Configuration, then Administrative Templates.
  3. After, go to Windows Components, and Windows Defender.
  4. Select Turn off Windows Defender from the right panel of the main window.
  5. Choose Enable – this will actually disable the default Windows Defender software.
  6. In the end, run the software and initiate a full scan.

Once you make sure that your Windows Defender is disabled, and after you finished installing the antivirus tool, perform a scan using it. If malicious files will be found, they will be removed.

Download SpeedFan for Windows 11, 10 & 7

SpeedFan is a lightweight PC utility that regulates the speed of your PC’s fan speed, allowing you to increase or decrease its speed, depending on your needs.

Given the software’s utility, it is especially useful for those of you that are bothered by their nosy fans, or laptop owners that want a little bit of extra airflow into their device, especially if they lack a cooling pad to help them out.

SpeedFan’s system requirements

Because of the nature of this tool, there aren’t really any system requirements as with other types of software, meaning that you can have pretty much any CPU or amount of RAM, just as long as your PC is fast enough to run your supported OS.

That being said, SpeedFan works under the following versions of Windows:

  • Windows 9x
  • Windows ME
  • Windows NT
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows 2003
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 10

Additionally, this utility also works well under multiple versions of Windows Server:

  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2012

In both cases, SpeedFan works fine on 64 bit too, so you can run it regardless of PC architecture.

Keep your laptop cool, or make it run more silently

As mentioned above, and as you can notice from the above screenshot, SpeedFan is fairly simplistic in what it does and how you can use it, and that’s precisely why it is so great to use.

SpeedFan is a hardware monitoring software that is able to change fan speeds according to system temperatures. SpeedFan can read S.M.A.R.T. values (and temperatures) from your hard disks and change the FSB speed.

Clock control

Anyone that ever tried squeezing more power out of their PCs knows about the concept of overclocking, and SpeedFan lets you take advantage of that feature as well.

The Clock tab lets you set the right fan speed based on Motherboard type, and CPU needs. It comes with an automatic mode that can be extremely helpful for anyone that isn’t all that experienced using similar features.

Constantly developed, and completely free

SpeedFan is updated quite often, and it needs top, especially considering the speed at which new motherboards and other PC components are released on the market.

This also leaves room for a lot of software tweaking, with bug fixes being released constantly.

In great contrast to this active development policy, the software is still freeware and available for anyone to download, with no ads or hidden downloads included, which is nothing more than another bonus.

Epic Games v. Apple case unveils Sony chose revenue over crossplay

In the court battle of Epic Games v. Apple over monopolistic App store practices, anti-gamer info regarding Sony’s position with Crossplay somehow surfaced.

While the industry’s eyes are peeled on how Epic Games’ lawsuit alleging Apple’s App Store of anticompetitive behavior shakes out, the early discovery portion of the trial is already fielding casualties of association.

As Epic Games builds its case against Apple, emails between itself and Sony were unmasked presumably as they relate to cross-platform gaming. Among the piles of communications, Epic Games had with partners, a particular correspondence between Epic and Sony has come to light. Several emails between Sony and Epic illuminate the rather anti-gamer/pro revenue position Sony maintained to keep Crossplay functionality from becoming a feature on its platform.

Sony-Epic Games Correspondance

Despite Epic dangling in font of Sony, exclusive promotions, conference partnerships, and various other ties in with one of the most profitable and culturally relevant games in Fortnite, Epic was unable to sway Sony’s decision to enable Crossplay between gamers on different hardware at the time.

Instead, Sony held onto the position that, “many companies are exploring this idea and not a single one can explain how cross-console play improves the PlayStation business.”

When Sony finally did warm to the idea, it was only in the context of revenue sharing and truncating potential revenue loss and not encouraging broader gaming experiences between already contentious console fans.

Sony Cross-Platform Revenue Share/ Epic Games

Documents show that as late as 2019, Sony devised a compromise to participate in Crossplay by introducing a “Cross-Platform Revenue Share” which would force publishers to pay Sony a royalty when PS gamers contributed more to a certain percentage of total cross-platform game profit. In effect, Cross-Platform Revenue Share would be put into place to prevent Sony from taking any potential losses in revenue that otherwise would have been had through exclusive play solely on the PS Network.

In addition to forcing publishers to pay out of pocket for continued gameplay, Sony’s CPRS also required a kill switch be baked into the Crossplay functionality that would disable all cross-platform interactions.

While all of the above seems clearly anti-gamer on the part of Sony, it’s unclear at this point, what stipulations and concessions were made by publishers to get Microsoft and Nintendo on board the Crossplay train.

It’s early in the Epic Games v. Apple trial and we expect to see more confidential industry news surface that’ll give more insight into the complex business of gaming. For its part, Microsoft seems to be backing Epic Games position both in spirit and practice as it recently lowered its own percentage share with publishers in its game store.

Verizon’s Yahoo deal proves Microsoft dodged an acquisition bullet

Verizon has sold 90 percent of its stake in its Yahoo holdings for $5 billion to the private equity firm Apollo Global, just $39 billion shy of what Microsoft was once willing to pay for it.

The year was 2008, and amid the burgeoning search advertisement wars, a struggling Microsoft sought to bolster its presence with a $44.6 billion bid to Yahoo to incorporate its relatively substantial search engine market share into its own portfolio.

Yahoo countered with an asking price of $57 billion, presumably undervaluing its own shares in China-based Alibaba, then Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer left the negotiating table defeated. At the time, some industry analysts called Microsoft’s failed acquisition of Yahoo a black spot in its portfolio as it continued to struggle against Google for mind and market share of advertising platforms.

Steve Ballmer Yahoo Verizon Deal

Eight years later, Verizon eventually sweet-talked then Yahoo CEO Marissa Myer into selling Yahoo for just $4.83 billion. At the time, Microsoft and Yahoo had reworked a continuous contract that, “required use of Bing results in Yahoo searches from 100% to 51%, and to allow Yahoo to kill the deal altogether “at-will” any time after October 2015.” Myers seemed eager to relinquish the Microsoft contract and the Verizon acquisition was a quick way to cut ties in her opinion.

Myers never got to officially end Yahoo’s contract with Microsoft and in an interesting twist, Verizon tapped Microsoft to become the exclusive search advertising platform for the network.

Fast forward 12 years, a few dozen new platforms and some questionable executive decisions from Yahoo, and the company is now being passed around for 90 percent less than what it once asked Microsoft for.

According to Verizon News Center, “funds managed by affiliates of Apollo (the “Apollo Funds”) entered into an agreement to acquire Verizon Media for $5 billion. Verizon will retain a 10% stake in the company, which will be known as Yahoo at close of the transaction and continue to be led by CEO Guru Gowrappan.”

Verizon 5g Ceo

While Microsoft’s early $44 billion Yahoo bid was a play for search advertising market share, Verizon’s later acquisition was more of a data-based ad play. Unfortunately for Verizon, Yahoo had already begun making investments in content creation under Marissa Myers that also continued into replacement Tim Armstrong’s tenure, ultimately choking the aging advertisement platform of financial resources to compete.

Neither Verizon nor Microsoft were able to affect their advertising market share via Yahoo, but only one company is really paying for that failed dream today.

Over 70 new Xbox One games now support FPS Boost on Xbox Series X|S consoles

Microsoft is adding FPS support to over 70 Xbox One games running on Xbox Series X|S consoles today. Free to play games like Paladins, Smite, Reams Royale, and Hyperscape can now run at 120 FPS on both the Series X and the Series S when connected to a 120Hz monitor, while other AAA games such as Far Cry 5, Anthem, or Assassin’s Creed are making the jump from 30FPS to 60FPS.

Overall, there are now 97 Xbox One games supporting FPS Boost on Xbox Series X|S consoles, and the full list is available on this page. Alien Isolation, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Halo Wars 2, Mad Max, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and Wasteland 3 are also getting FPS support today, though please note some of these games don’t support FPS Boost on the less powerful Series S.

FPS Boost is a system-level feature on Xbox Series X|S consoles that can double or sometimes quadruple the framerate on backwards-compatible Xbox One games. Along with Auto HDR, FPS is a feature that can really breathe some new life into these old games, and it really benefits games that were locked to 30FPS.

On the Series X, FPS Boost won’t be enabled automatically when the feature requires the game’s resolution to be reduced to ensure smooth performance. For games that support it, FPS Boost can be turned on and off under the Compatibility Options in the Manage game and add-ons setting, as explained in the video below.

It’s great to see FPS Boost support making its way to an increasing number of Xbox One games, and it’s definitely a killer Series X|S feature that Sony’s PlayStation 5 can’t match for now. Microsoft really deserves credit for its work on backwards compatibility, and many of the games supporting FPS Boost are currently available in Xbox Game Pass and EA Play.

Microsoft had plans to reduce its Xbox Store cut to 12%

If Xbox remains a challenger at the beginning of the 9th console generation, Microsoft was apparently planning to shake up the console market by reducing its cut on digital games sales on the Xbox Store to just 12%. That’s according to a confidential document from January filed in the Epic Games vs Apple case (via The Verge), where a table about Microsoft Store Standard Fees mention that all PC and Xbox games will move from the standard 30% cut to 12% in 2021.

Microsoft made headlines last week when it announced that the Windows 10 Microsoft Store would reduce its cut on game sales to just 12 percent in August 2021, matching what the Epic Games Store has been offering since launch. Adopting this same 12 percent cut for Xbox games would have been truly unprecedented, especially since console makers are used to selling consoles at a loss or with razor-thin margins while making big profits on games sales.

Confidential Microsoft Store Document 12% Cut On Xbox Games

However, Microsoft has now denied in two separate statements shared with The Verge that it’s planning to reduce its Xbox Store cut to 12%. Keep in mind that the aforementioned document was filed in January, and it’s not clear what happened since then.

A Microsoft spokesperson initially said “we have no plans to change the revenue share for console games at this time,” in a statement to The Verge on Saturday, before issuing a clearer statement on Sunday.

“We will not be updating the revenue split for console publishers,” says a Microsoft spokesperson. Microsoft still refuses to answer whether the document is inaccurate, or simply that plans changed.

If it makes sense for Microsoft to follow Epic Games’ lead with its PC games store and put more pressure on market leader Steam, the company probably didn’t have a real incentive to adopt a 12% revenue cut on its Xbox Store. The move may have put some real pressure on its competitors in the console market, though it’s possible the loss in revenue could have been too important for Microsoft, especially at a time when the company is spending a lot of money to acquire new studios and bring games to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

“Console makers such as Microsoft invest significantly in developing dedicated console hardware but sell them below cost or at very low margins to create a market that game developers and publishers can benefit from. Given these fundamental differences in the significance of the platform and the business model, we have more work to do to establish the right set of principles for game consoles,” said Rima Alailyk, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Microsoft last year.

Last but not least, Microsoft announced today that Alan Wake, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2, Dungeon of the Endless, Final Fantasy IX, Hotline Miami, and Plebby Quest: The Crusades will leave the Xbox Game Pass catalog next week on May 15. That’s it for now, but stay tuned for the second wave of new Xbox Game Pass games coming later this month.

Microsoft Edge adds reverse image search feature for some Insiders

Microsoft Edge is getting a new search experience that’s designed to let users perform a reverse image search in a sidebar. As spotted by Reddit user Leopeva64-2, the company is currently testing the sidebar search option with select Insiders on the Dev channel, but we noticed that it’s available in Edge Canary, too.

With the sidebar search, Microsoft Edge users will be able to run reverse image searches in a side panel without leaving the current tab. The search functionality is performed with Bing, and currently, the web browser isn’t offering an option to change the search engine to Google. It is similar to the “Search in sidebar” feature which was introduced to Edge stable back in January this year, and it allows users to search for information on the web.

To try out this feature, Edge Insiders will need to right-click on an image and then select the “Search in sidebar for image” option from the context menu. Search results will immediately show up in a dedicated pane on the right side of the page, showing web results and a list of related content. The feature also extracts text from the image directly and provides an option to copy it.

The reverse image search capability is only available in the most recent Microsoft Edge Canary and Dev versions at the time of writing. It appears to be a controlled rollout, as the feature isn’t available for everyone yet. This search experience will need to go through different Edge Insider channels before it becomes generally available in the production version of the web browser.

0x800F0830 Windows Update or Upgrade Error: 6 Easy Fixes

Updating or upgrading the OS is usually a hassle-free process and shouldn’t take too long. But we often come across Windows Update errors. One such is 0x800f0830, encountered both during the update as well as installing a new iteration of the OS.

  • Disable the installed antivirus, firewall, or any other similar security software. If that works, we recommend you proceed with the installation and then get a reliable antivirus for Windows.

Microsoft Security Essentials Preliminary Scan Detects Malware

Preliminary scan results show that malicious or potentially unwanted software might exist is the message displayed by Microsoft Security Essentials.

The warning shows up after a system scan and it somehow offers information about a potential security alert.

However, the message itself isn’t saying too much and it’s also quite ambiguous: is your device infected, should you be worried, or everything is fine, and you can mind your own business?

Well, the focus word from this alert is might. During the system scan, Microsoft Security Essentials didn’t find malware or viruses but certain software might appear as malicious.

Overall, the bottom idea is that you have nothing to worry about – usually third-party apps or processes might be seen by the Windows system as potentially deceptive programs.

However, when security breaches are involved is always better to be prepared for the worst.

So, here are the best ways in which you can react when you receive the Preliminary scan results show that malicious or potentially unwanted software might exist message.

How can I deal with Preliminary scan results… alerts?

1. Restart your device and re-scan the system

  1. Restart your Windows 10 system.
  2. Run Microsoft Security Essentials and initiate a new scan.
  3. Press Windows key + R to start the Run app.
  4. Type msconfig and press Enter.msconfig windows boot
  5. From System Configuration, switch to the Boot tab, choose Safe boot and check the Network option. Click Apply, then OK.
  6. After rebooting, run the scan again.

The Preliminary scan results show that malicious or potentially unwanted software might exist warning shouldn’t be displayed now.

2. Reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials

  1. Press Windows key + S, type control panel, and select Control Panel from results.
  2. Click on Programs and Features.
  3. Find the Microsoft Security Essentials entry and uninstall the program on your computer.

Next, download Microsoft Security Essentials from Microsoft’s official support page and follow on-screen prompts for installing the software on your Windows 10 computer.

If the steps from above aren’t resolving your problem you should uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials and reinstall the program afterward.

Of course, in the end, run a system scan and observe the results. If the warning message is still there, resume the next troubleshooting solution.

3. Install a dedicated antivirus or antimalware program

In order to be sure that your system is fully protected and that your data is safe and secured you should choose to install a different security program.

Depending on your own situation and on your own preference you can choose a paid security software.

We recommend you to use the solution below as it is a great security tool which will properly scan your computer.

TotalAV

Avoid any false detections of the built-in solutions and protect your computer with a dedicated antivirus.
Check Price Visit Website

If after running a more complex scan you don’t receive any warnings, you have nothing to worry about – otherwise, just choose to remove the infected files.

Optional, if you already installed a dedicated antivirus / antimalware software, you can remove Microsoft Security Essentials from your Windows 10 device.

In that way, you won’t experience any other error messages and you can also be sure that your system is 100% protected against deceptive programs or malware attacks.

We strongly suggest checking out some of the best antiviruses with unlimited license and install the one that best suits your needs.

So, that’s how you should react when Microsoft Security Essentials is displaying alerts such as the Preliminary scan results show that malicious or potentially unwanted software might exist prompt.

Download Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool

If you have been hit with malware in Windows 10, you will be glad to hear that Microsoft has a program called Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Below are more details.

Microsoft released this software back in 2018 and it was aimed at all Windows users. The download links are available at the end of this article; but here’s what Microsoft says about its antimalware tool:

After you download the tool, the tool runs one time to check your computer for infection by specific prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps remove any infection it finds.

Also, for those of you who were wondering how the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool differs from an antivirus product, here’s the explanation with three important differences:

– The tool removes malicious software from an already-infected computer. Antivirus products block malicious software from running on a computer. It is significantly more desirable to block malicious software from running on a computer than to remove it after infection.
– The tool removes only specific prevalent malicious software. Specific prevalent malicious software is a small subset of all the malicious software that exists today.
– The tool focuses on the detection and removal of active malicious software. Active malicious software is malicious software that is currently running on the computer. The tool cannot remove malicious software that is not running. However, an antivirus product can perform this task.

How can I get Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool?

The good news is that you might have its latest version already installed on your system because the tool is included in all the monthly Windows Updates.

So, if you have turned on Automatic Updates, then you’ve already received the latest version of the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

However, you can simply use the link below to download it and run it right away. You will find the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

How to protect yourself against malware

Besides using the Microsoft tool or a strong antivirus like the one recommended above, there are a few basic measures that you can take to keep away from such threats.

Here’s what you can do to stay away from malware, viruses and other issues like that:

  1. The inbox of your e-mail can be one of the main gateways for malicious software so make sure you don’t click on e-mails and links from unknown sources.
  2. Always download apps and software from their original, trusted source. Although the program has the same name and even dimensions, downloading it from a remote website doesn’t guarantee the integrity of the software.
  3. Pay attention when you install a software package. Apart from the main app that you need, the lot may also install other bloatware or even malware so read every message on the screen before clicking Next.
  4. Don’t visit websites that are red-flagged by your browser or your antivirus software unless you know exactly what you’re doing.
  5. Don’t install cookies, add-ons, or extensions from untrusted websites as they might contain adware and spyware that can cause havoc on your PC.
  6. Avoid using public hotspots and if you really must do that, stay behind a VPN or protect yourself with a powerful antivirus.
  7. Don’t accept wireless file transfers from unknown sources because that can be the perfect gateway for viruses.

With that advice, we conclude our article. Also, if the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is not installing, check the latest Windows updates and try again.

Nowadays, malware is literally everywhere and although it’s a lot better to prevent than to cure, you need an antimalware tool to get rid of any threats.

However, after you get rid of whatever malware you are fighting right now, take a look at our selection of the best antiviruses with unlimited license to protect your PC.

It’s a lot better to block the attacks and malicious files before they reach your system. Send us your thoughts in a comment below.

PowerToys 0.37 is now available with minor fixes

Microsoft has released a new update for its PowerToys suite of tools, bringing version 0.37 to all users. This release includes a handful of fixes and a few improvements to features such as PowerToys Run and changes to keyboard shortcuts in FancyZones, and more.

In addition to this, the company has removed the legacy Settings app and converted the Keyboard Manager tool into a separate executable process. PowerRename now has some capitalization options, too.

One important feature that still isn’t included in this release is the much-awaited Video Conferencing Mute utility, which is still available in the experimental builds. The team noted that it needs more work before it can be released to the general public. “Our goals for v0.37 release cycle Video Conference Mute work so we can bring it into the stable branch,” said Clint Rutkas, Program manager lead on PowerToys.

Here’s the full list of improvements and fixes in PowerToys version 0.37:

  • FancyZones editor default launching key is Win+Shift+`
    • Windows Terminal’s new Quake mode will use Win+`. We feel this is a far better use of the keystroke.
    • Current PowerToys users can update this in our settings in the FancyZone section.
  • Removed our v1 HTML based settings system

New Spec – Feedback please!

FancyZones

  • Editor UX bug fixes. Thanks @niels9001

It is worth noting that PowerToys version 0.35 is available for users running Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) or higher. This means that users on older versions of Windows will not be able to install the latest update. However, most users will probably already be running a newer version of the OS, so it shouldn’t make a difference. As always, those who are interested in installing the tool can head to the official GitHub page to download it.

New meetings and webinar capabilities in Teams, Show Changes feature for Excel, and more – what’s new in Microsoft 365 in April

Microsoft has published its monthly recap of new features and capabilities added to the Microsoft 365 suite of apps and services. This time around, the company has detailed a bunch of improvements made to Microsoft Teams, Word, Outlook, and Excel, along with some updates to other products. Here’s a look at everything you need to know.

Microsoft Teams

thumbnail image 13 of blog post titled What’s New in Microsoft Teams | April 2021

First off, Microsoft Teams picked up a slew of updates this month. The first of them is the ability to use live transcription with speaker attribution in Teams meetings. The AI-powered feature was first announced in July last year, and it allows organizers and presenters to transcribe everything that the participants speak in a scheduled meeting. It is available for English-speaking users in the United States.

Microsoft has also introduced a new Meeting recap feature in Teams, which allows participants to get a quick overview of important information once the meeting is over. The meeting recap includes a meeting recording, transcript, chat, attached files, and more. External presenter support is now available for Live Events in Teams, and the app now lets organizers manage a live event as a Producer in a separate window.

In addition, Microsoft Teams is rolling out a new Breakout room retention and participant reassignment functionality to desktop users. This means that participants will now remain assigned to their breakout rooms unless the meeting organizer chooses to change them. Furthermore, the organizers can set a time limit for all breakout rooms created in a meeting session. Some of the other features added to Teams in April can be seen below.

Rounding off the features for Teams, the new AI-based polling capabilities are now coming to mobile devices. The company is also launching intelligent poll suggestions, post-meeting insights, and two new poll types, including open text and multiple-choice questions. These updates will become generally available in a couple of weeks.

Lastly, the software gaint has recently unveiled a family of new Modern accessories certified for Teams, including a webcam, a USB-C speaker, and two headsets. There are also some new features for frontline workers and Government customers, which are detailed in the Microsoft Teams blog post.

Microsoft Word

Next up is Microsoft Word. Last month, Microsoft introduced a new capability in Word for the Web that enables users to automatically convert their Word documents to PowerPoint presentations. The feature leverages the power of AI to include rich content such as images, videos, and icons in the content. The “Export to PowerPoint presentation” feature is now available in Word for the web for all Microsoft 365 subscribers. However, it currently supports the English language only.

Microsoft Excel

Excel on the web is getting a much-anticipated feature that allows file owners to keep track of the changes made to their spreadsheets when collaborating with other colleagues. The “Show Changes” maintains a history of all the revisions made to a workbook for up to 60 days and includes details such as author name, changed values, and the exact location of the change. This update is currently rolling out now to all Microsoft 365 subscribers.

Microsoft Planner, Outlook on the Web, and other updates

Planner_More Labels

To end the recap, we’ll look at some updates for Microsoft Planner, Outlook, and the other Microsoft 365 apps. Microsoft has increased the number of task labels in its task management tool. Users can now add up to 25 labels in different colors to tasks across all major platforms.

In addition, Outlook on the web is getting a bit of a refreshed design this month. The app is picking up a redesigned left pane that will provide quick access to all the important elements such as contacts, calendar, email, and shortcuts to launch other Microsoft 365 apps. This change should make it easier for users to navigate the app. The company also plans to bring this capability to Outlook for Windows later this year.

Moving on to features aimed at IT professionals. The software gaint has announced some new capabilities for Microsoft Defender for Endpoint to help organizations protect unmanaged devices on their networks. Finally, the Remote Desktop client for macOS has recently received an update that brings native support for the M1 chip, and Microsoft also added support to draw AWS architecture in the Visio desktop app.

Netstat is Not Recognized: 5 Ways to Enable it

Netstat is a handy command-line utility that lets users view network details in the Command Prompt. However, many reported that netstat is not recognized.

This is a powerful tool that lets you check listening ports and more, and if it’s not working, you might encounter problems analyzing your network and network traffic.

Luckily, there are ways to fix this issue, and today we’re going to show you how to do it.

Why is netstat not recognized?

  • Check the command for typos. In case you enter the command incorrectly, it won’t be recognized.
  • An issue with a system variable might be causing this error.
  • In rare cases, the file might be missing or moved from its default location.

What do I do if netstat command is not recognized in Windows?

1. Make sure you’re entering the command correctly

  1. Press Windows key + S and enter command prompt.
  2. Now select Command Prompt from the list of results.
  3. Enter the following command and press Enter: netstat
  4. You should now see the results.

First, make sure you’re entering the command for Netstat correctly. If you don’t enter the command correctly, you’ll see that the netstat is not recognized as an internal or external command error.

That’s a short and straightforward command to enter. Make sure that the command doesn’t include any typos after entering it. Then press the Enter keyboard key to initiate the utility.

You can review a full breakdown of Netstat commands and their functions in this guide on how to use the Netstat command in Windows.

2. Start Netstat by entering its full path

  1. Start Command Prompt as we showed you in the previous solution.
  2. When the Command Prompt starts, run the following command: C:\WINDOWS\System32\netstat.exe
  3. You should now see the results on the screen.

If Netstat still doesn’t work, try entering the command as a full file path into the Command Prompt.

So, you’ll need to enter the full Netstat folder path in the Prompt as shown directly below. Then press the Enter key to initiate the command.

3. Add a new system environment variable

  1. Click the magnifying glass taskbar button in Windows 10.
  2. Enter the keyword environment in the search tool that opens.
  3. Then click Edit the system environment variables.
  4. Click Environment Variables button.
  5. Select Path within the System variables box.
  6. Click the Edit button.
  7. Check if the following value is available %SystemRoot%\system32
  8. If not, click the New button on the Edit environment variable window.
  9. Input this new variable new variable: %SystemRoot%\system32
  10. Press the OK button.
  11. Then click OK to close the Environment Variables window.

If system32 path is missing, you might encounter netstat not recognized error in Windows 10, but the issue should be gone after creating the path.

4. Open Netstat from its folder

  1. Click the File Explorer button on the taskbar.
  2. Copy this folder path with the Ctrl + C hotkey: C:\Windows\System32
  3. Then paste that path into File Explorer’s folder bar by pressing the Ctrl + V keyboard shortcut.
  4. Type Netstat in the search box as in the shot directly below.
  5. Click NETSTAT.EXE to open that command-line utility.

If you’re getting netstat not recognized erorr on Windows follow the steps above and ensure that netstat is at its default location.

5. Check if Netstat is in the Recycle Bin

  1. If you can’t find the NETSTAT.EXE in its folder, click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  2. Then enter Netstat in the Recycle Bin’s search box.
  3. Select NETSTAT.EXE within the Recycle Bin.
  4. Next, click the Restore the selected items option.

If you can’t find NETSTAT.EXE in the Recycle Bin or its folder, that utility has probably been entirely deleted.

NETSTAT.EXE files are available for download at websites, but not all those sources are guaranteed to be entirely reputable. Check all potential file download sources very carefully.

If you need to restore a deleted NETSTAT.EXE file, updating Windows 10 to a new build version or performing a Windows 10 factory reset will restore this file.

You’ll need to reinstall third-party software if you reset Windows 10. However, your user files can be retained.

So, that’s how users can fix the netstat not recognized Windows 10 error. Some of the above potential fixes might also resolve the same not recognized issue for other command-line tools.

Calibri is dead. Choose Microsoft’s next default font

Microsoft introduced five new fonts and one of them should replace Calibri as the system’s default font. For that, users are invited to submit their votes.

Only one will be the chosen one, but the four other will be kept in the fonts menu across all Office 365 and other Microsoft apps.

While default fonts might not be very different in terms of aspect, they still bring some uniqueness when they’re used, Microsoft says.

They communicate a distinct personality in their own quiet way—a personality that by extension becomes our personality as well.

And one reason why default fonts are not too fancy or bold is that their role is rather functional and not visual. To that extent, they serve their purpose and keep users focused on their tasks.

Tenorite, Bierstadt, Skeena, Seaford, and Grandview

seaford font

These are the names of the five newcomers commissioned by Microsoft and they’ve all been created by graphic designers. They embody various sans-serif styles—humanist, geometric, swiss-style, and industrial.

According to the designers, Tenorite brings crisp-looking shapes and wide characters with large spacing which makes it easy to read.

On the other hand, Bierstadt is described as more mechanical and rationalized than the current Arial font. This makes it minimalistic.

The third, font, Skeena, is softer, with curvier endings to the letters and visible differences between thick and thin variants.

What the designers intended with the fourth font, Seaford, was to evoke familiarity. This is how one of the designers describes it:

At the start there was just a broad description of a personality—comfortable, warm, inviting, animated—so we began by studying the overall movement of old-style serifed faces. We hoped to create the same, familiar kind of warmth, but without the serifs.

Last but not least, Grandview takes a more industrial approach starting from Bahnschrift font.

Read more about the fonts as their designers describe them in the release notes. You can use them freely in the cloud across Microsoft 365 apps and then vote for the next default font on Microsoft’s Twitter account.
