Microsoft acquires cloud migration company Movere

Microsoft is continuing to bolster its Azure services through acquisition, this time with the addition of cloud migration company Movere to the arsenal. Movere seeks to make it easier for companies to move to the cloud, having learned some of the pitfalls over the last eleven years as it grew as a consulting company working to provide actionable data, “giving customers the power of the story that only data can tell.” Movere has been working closely with Microsoft over the years, and Microsoft is pushing hard to get more and more companies to make the move to the cloud, so this is a natural fit.

Microsoft sees the acquisition as a complement to both Azure Migrate and other 3rd party solutions in helping make the move, according to Jeremy Winter in an Azure Blog post announcing the acquisition:

Movere’s innovative discovery and assessment capabilities will complement Azure Migrate and our integrated partner solutions, making migration an easier process for our customers. We believe that successful cloud migrations enable business transformation, and this acquisition underscores our investments to make that happen.

Together, Azure Migrate, Movere, and our ecosystem of independent software vendor (ISV) partners’ solutions provide choice and a comprehensive set of capabilities from discovery, assessment, to migration and optimization. We aim to streamline our customers’ journey to the cloud, enabling them to bring innovation and transformation with the power of Azure.

Microsoft has been increasing its pace of Azure acquisitions lately, as it continues to build out what’s quickly becoming the center of the company’s focus as it moves beyond Windows and Office.

Korean carrier SK Telecom will leverage Microsoft’s Project xCloud to launch 5G-based cloud gaming service in the country

Korean carrier SK Telecom announced at a press conference today that it has teamed up with Microsoft for delivering a joint 5G-based cloud gaming service in the country. According to the press release, the carrier will be “an exclusive operating partner of Microsoft’s cloud gaming service in Korea,” and it will leverage its 5G and LTE infrastructure to help Microsoft fine tune Project xCloud for mobile gamers around the world.

As you may know, Microsoft’s Project xCloud game streaming service will focus exclusively phones when it goes into public testing in October, and the software will really need to work hand in hand with carriers to make sure that Project xCloud can deliver a great gaming experience. Today’s announcement put the emphasis on the “super-fast speed and ultra-low latency” delivered by SK Telecom’s 5G network, and the Korean carrier currently has over 1 million 5G subscribers in the country.

There are still a lot of unknowns about Project xCloud, including details about supported phones. Beyond the latency issues that have often been talked about, it’s also the monthly data caps that most carriers still use today that could be more problematic for users, as streaming video games in high definition will likely consume a lot of data.

It also remains to be seen if carriers could soon use Project xCloud as an incentive to join their networks, just like T-Mobile is now offering free Netflix in the US, and Sprint is doing the same with Hulu. Anyway, with South Korea being the fourth largest gaming market in the world and an early adopter for 5G, this should be a great place for game streaming services to thrive.

This band is using Microsoft’s Windows Sonic technology to make an “audio-only music video”

Microsoft has teamed up with with the American rock band X Ambassadors to create what they’re calling an “audio-only music video” especially for those who are blind or with low vision (via Engadget). The band worked with Microsoft technologists to create the pictureless music video thanks to the company’s Windows Sonic 3D technology.

Inspiration of the project comes from the band’s lead keyboardist, Casey Harris, who has had low vision since his birth. He noted that:

“As someone who’s been blind since birth, it was really important to me to make a video that the blind community could enjoy as much as the sighted community enjoys our visual content.”

Users will be able to take advantage of the new 3D audio experiences using the band’s new “Boom” app, which is available for Windows 10, Android, and iOS. Users will have two different experiences to choose from—Bushwick, Brooklyn where the band’s rehearsal studio used to reside, as well as Ithaca, New York where Casey and his brother Sam grew up.

Casey also mentioned that those who are blind or with low vision aren’t the only people who can enjoy the thrill of the 3D video. “I mean, I’d say the app is for everybody,” he said in the video above.

New Microsoft mouse and keyboard have been revealed by FCC filings

A new wireless keyboard as well as a mouse to go with it have both been passed though the FCC, likely designed primarily for new Surface hardware Microsoft could be set to announce next month (via MSPU). Given these documents have just recently passed less than a month ahead of the upcoming Surface hardware event it’s possible for them to show up during the event.

As seen in the diagrams in the FCC listing, the wireless keyboard—with 1898 as the model number—will include a battery chamber along one of the corners of the device. The mouse going under model number 1929 won’t include a removable battery cover according to its diagram, potentially suggesting it might be charged via a cable.

The company is set to announce a multitude of new additions to the Surface lineup, including Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3, and a Surface Book 3. A few media outlets are also suggesting these devices could include the newest 10th generation Intel CPUs as well as USB type-C support. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Our Guide to the Office 365 Dashboard

Once you’re up and running with a Microsoft Office 365 subscription, the central hub for all your activities will be the Office 365 Dashboard. Accessible by visiting Office.com and logging in with your account, the dashboard is home to all the apps, activities, and services that you need to be successful. In this guide, we’ll take a look at some of the features of the Office 365 dashboard, and help you get the most out of it.

App Launcher

One of the first noticeable areas when visiting the Office 365 dashboard is the App Launcher. Available right on the top of the page, you’ll find that this will link to the web versions of any apps or services that are covered under your subscription. In our case, some of those include Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint, Teams, Yammer, Dynamics 365, Flow, and Planner.

You also can access all your apps by clicking the All Apps link on the side. As a shortcut, there’s also the Start New button, which lets you start a new Office document, or upload one to get started. Finally, if your subscription allows it, you should also be an Install Office button, which will let you manage and install physical versions of the Office apps.

Our Guide to the Office 365 Dashboard

Search Bar

At the very top of the Office 365 Dashboard, you’ll notice a search bar. As the name suggests, this lets you find any content across all of Office 365. That can be a specific document or file you were working on, a specific contact, or even a specific app. It is designed to make your life easy, skipping out on visiting links manually.

Our Guide to the Office 365 Dashboard

Pop-out Menu

At the top left side of the Office 365 Dashboard, you’ll notice that there is an icon that looks like 9 tiny squares. If you click this icon, it will summon a pop-out menu. This menu is typically accessible across any of the Office 365 online apps and is a mini version of the dashboard. On the top, you’ll see a list of apps. Then, in the middle, you’ll see a list of documents. You can create a new document from this pop-out menu by clicking on New.

Our Guide to the Office 365 Dashboard

Documents Section

Next up, in the middle section of the Office 365 Dashboard is the documents section. Here, there will be a few tabs for certain Office content. These include Recent, Pinned, Shared with me and Discover.

Recent is a great way to access some of the files you’ve most commonly accessed across Office 365. Pinned, meanwhile, allows you to pin Office documents for quick access. You can do this by right clicking anything on the Recent list, and choosing Add to pinned. Third up, with Shared with me, you’ll be able to see some of the Office files shared with you via email, without having to go into Outlook or OneDrive. Finally, with Discover, you’ll be able to access some of the files on your SharePoint.

If some of the files that you’d like to see aren’t showing up in this section, then you can always click the More in OneDrive link at the bottom of the screen to navigate to OneDrive and download or view files.

You also can choose an alternate view for these files, by clicking the icon in the top right corner. This will let you see it as tiles, or as a list.

OneDrive and SharePoint Sections

The third area of the Office 365 Dashboard is the OneDrive section. This area is home to your most recently used OneDrive folders. It gives you quick access, without having to manually visit OneDrive.com to access. Of course, you can always head to OneDrive from the dashboard too, simply click on the Go to OneDrive link in this section.

Finally, all the way on the bottom of the Office 365 Dashboard is the SharePoint section. This section will give you a look at some of your most recently visited SharePoint websites. It’s a quick way to get the SharePoint content you need, without having to manually launch the app from the web. But, if you do need to launch SharePoint, the Go to SharePoint link on the bottom will make it easy.

[Updated] Latest optional update for Windows 10 version 1903 causes CPU spikes for some users

Last Friday, Microsoft released an optional update for the latest version of Windows 10, the version 1903 (or May 2019 Update) in the form of the build 18362.329. This patch brought a lot of quality fixes and the release notes didn’t indicate any known issues, but some users have since been complaining about some unusual CPU spikes after installing this update.

In two separate Reddit threads spotted by Windows Latest, users have been discussing these high CPU usage problems, and some of them identified Cortana’s background process (SearchUI.exe) as the culprit. For these users, uninstalling the patch seems to be the only sure way to make things back to normal. It’s hard to know if this is a widespread issue, and we haven’t been seeing unusually high CPU usage after installing the build 18362.329 on one of our PCs.

Interestingly, it seems some Windows Insiders in the Release Preview ring who got access this new optional patch ahead of everyone else noticed that Cortana could cause CPU spikes of between 30% and 40% in this build, even when the digital assistant isn’t being used. Several Feedback Hub items about this issue have been submitted since August, but Microsoft apparently didn’t act on them, maybe because they have remained buried under many other items in the Feedback Hub

As of this writing, Microsoft has yet to acknowledge any problems with this optional update, but the reason these optional “C” and “D” patches that Microsoft ships later in the month (after the “B” releases happening on Patch Tuesday) is because they’re preview-quality updates. “The intent of these releases is to provide visibility into, and enable testing of, the non-security fixes that will be included in the next Update Tuesday release,” explained Mike Fortin / Corporate Vice President, Windows, in a blog post from December 2018.

We’ll update this post if Microsoft acknowledges this high CPU usage issue in this latest optional patch, but in the meantime we remind you that you can roll back to previous build if you’re seeing unusual CPU spikes in the Windows Task manager. Keep in mind that optional Windows 10 updates can be buggy, and it’s fine to keep them as all the new quality fixes will eventually ship in the next Patch Tuesday Update.

Update: Microsoft has finally acknowledged the issue and said that a fix will be available in an upcoming release.

Here’s how Microsoft’s redesigned Start Menu could look like

We all know by now the plans that Microsoft has for Windows 10 20H1 in terms of UI changes.

The overhauled Windows 10 UI to come in the Spring of 2020

With the accidentally leaked Windows 10 build 18947, a big part of the company’s changes to the Start Menu and Action Center were revealed.

If you like the new Microsoft will probably go with the new one and its Fluent Design elements.

Of course, the leaked version was in early stages, and you could expect many other changes to be implemented before its full release.

Just a month ago we showed you how Windows 10 could look like through the eyes of a concept designer, and now, another design of the Start Menu has surfaced up, this time by @Scoots37.

New Start Menu concept design with Fluent Design elements

new Start Menu concept design
This new design is based on the leaked build and is very close to what Microsoft wants to implement.

As with the original leaked design, the concept has split the Windows community in two: users who love it and users who hate it.

Check out a couple of opinions and concerns expressed by Windows 10 users:

I hate it and will not replace my old start

Nope, if this comes out without an option to revert the design imma hate it. Don’t need to mess around with the start menu. Remember Win8??

Most users share the opinion that the new design looks more like a mobile version, and the current version is much better:

Ugh. Now Windows is butt ugly like Android.

A UI only an iPhone fan could love.

Keep in mind that this is only a concept design, and Microsoft’s overhaul of the UI might look a little different.

What’s your take on the new design changes that are coming to Windows 10 next year?

Leave your thoughts in the comments section below and we’ll continue the talk.

Windows 10 ARM is almost ready to run on your Lumia 950

Earlier this year, a project to bring Windows on ARM to the Lumia 950 family was started by a group of dedicated developers.

The task of bringing the full version of Windows 10 designed for ARM chipsets to mobile phones that are supposed to run only on Windows 10 Mobile seemed almost impossible.

Windows 10 on ARM comes to Lumia 950

But with time and a lot of work, the team lead by Gustave Monce succeeded in adding more and more features and managed to make the majority of the phone’s sensors to work.

The new list of sensors that are working on Lumia 950 is almost complete.

Despite that, there are still things that don’t work properly, but the team said that all the functionality and fixes will be available in a future update:

Not too sure when we will release this yet, maybe in the middle of the month, maybe next month, I don’t want to make too many releases since we have no real update way

After things like Camera and the USB-C will be sorted out, the project will come to an end and you’ll be able to test it on your Lumia 950, if you so choose.

Activity will keep you connected with events that are relevant to you from your Power BI account, through a feed. This way, you’ll stay up to date with the latest comments and activities.

This feature is not yet available, but Microsoft said that it will come soon and more info will be revealed with its release.

Finally, the re-built app navigation makes it easier to go through pages and items on mobile. There’s a new bottom navigation bar for that.

And also a new top bar that allows you to access the notification center and search for Power BI content.

How to Fix the Origin Access Error on Windows 10/11

A significant number of Origin users have reported seeing an error whenever they tried logging into Origin Access.

This error appears even if the Internet connection is running correctly. Some users have said they can even download files from Origin but still can’t log into Origin Access.

At first glance, this issue seems to be caused by a server-side error, but our team has searched for the best troubleshooting methods for this situation. Read on to find out what the methods are.

What can I do to avoid an Origin Access error while signing in?

1. Run Origin with administrator privileges

To make sure that the issue appearing while singing into Origin Access is not caused by a lack of permission on Windows 10, it is recommended that you follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the location of your Origin launcher.
  2. Right-click it -> select Run as administrator.

Note: If you want to set these settings permanently, right-click the .exe file -> select Properties -> Compatibility tab -> tick the box Run this program as administrator -> click OK.

2. Make sure your system’s clock and date are correct

  1. Click Cortana -> type Control panel -> open it.
  2. Select the Clock, Language, and Region option -> Date and Time.
  3. Inside the Internet Time tab -> click on Change Settings.
  4. Make sure the Synchronize with an internet time server option is enabled.
  5. Click OK to close the time settings.

3. Deactivate any VPN software

Using VPN software when trying to connect to the Origin Access platform will cause an error to appear.

Please close any VPN software entirely and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Remove the Origin temporary file

  1. Right-click your taskbar -> click on Task Manager.
  2. Inside the Task Manager -> find Origin.exe and OriginWebHelperService.exe -> End task.
  3. Press Win+R keys on your keyboard -> type %ProgramData%/Origin -> Enter.
  4. Delete all the files and folders at that location but DO NOT delete the LocalContent folder.
  5. Open the Run dialog by pressing Win+R again -> type %AppData% -> hit Enter.
  6. Inside the folder -> delete the Origin folder.
  7. Click AppData the location link to open that folder -> open the Local folder -> delete Origin.
  8. Restart your computer and check to see if the issue persists.

5. Contact EA support to get help with the Origin Access error

If all the methods mentioned above have failed to solve the problem, then it is recommended that you contact EA Support.

Bing search box is back, this time on Windows 10 build 18970

Microsoft is not giving up on the Bing-powered search box in the Windows 10 lockscreen.

The Bing search box is still coming on Windows 10’s lockscreen

We’ve already reported a couple of months back that the tech giant is working on adding a new Bing search tool to the Windows 10 lockscreen with Windows 10 20H1 build 18932.

Now, the feature was spotted again in Windows 10 build 18970:

The Bing search box in the bottom left corner seems similar with the search box from the Taskbar and because of its positioning, the time and date have been move to the top left corner.

We don’t know very much about the new search box, as Microsoft didn’t shared any details about it.

Windows 10 users hate the idea of a Bing search box

The most interesting thing is if the search results will be displayed on the lock screen or you’ll have to login to see them. We’ll just have to wait and, hopefully soon, see how it works.

The Bing-powered search box on the Windows 10 lockscreen seen in build 18970 raised a lot of eyebrows in the Windows community, as the majority don’t like the implementation and use scenarios:

The old one on bottom is always better. Designers nowadays design just for the sake of change.

Maybe they are experimenting with an option to search the internet from the lockscreen? If so I can’t imagine the search box staying there. Either way seems a little pointless?

What do you think of a Bing search box on Windows 10‘s lockscreen?

Share your thoughts in the comments section below and we’ll continue the talk.

New Power BI update lets you add parameters to a URL

After receiving a new set of capacity settings to give more control to admins, Power BI‘s August update brought new features like grouping and Analytics.

Power BI gets URL parameters for Paginated Reports

Now, Microsoft has released a new update to introduce the support for URL parameters for paginated reports in the Power BI service.

In other words, report authors now have the ability to send commands to paginated reports in Power BI by just adding a parameter to a URL.

When you create a report parameter in Power BI Report Builder, you set a parameter name. If you want to use report parameters, you’ll have to add rp: in front of the parameter name for Power BI to recognize it in the URL.

For example, to set a report parameter in an URL, you’ll have to use rp:parameter=value.

Here’s how Christopher Finlan, Principal Program Manager for Power BI is describing the use of URL parameters:

So if I want to specify a value for the “Salesperson” parameter for my report in an app, I’d use the following URL: https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/apps/xxxxxxx-c4c4-4217-afd9-3920a0d1e2b0/rdlreports/b1d5e659-639e-41d0-b733-05d2bca9853c?rp:Salesperson=Tiggee

If “Salesperson” was instead a multi-value parameter that accepted multiple values, I can use an & to add an additional parameter value to my URL like so – https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/rdlreports/xxxxxxx-abc7-40f0-b456-febzf9cdda4d?rp:Salesperson=Tie+Bear&rp:Salesperson=Mickey

The new Generate Link feature easily integrates with URL parameters

Furthermore, Microsoft also announced the introduction of a new feature this week called Generate Link.

This feature aims to help with the discovery of the parameter names by generating a link of the current report with the parameter values appended to the URL.

Also, besides report parameters, you can set the export format of your report in the URL. Using the rdl: prefix will allow you to set the output format in which the report can be downloaded directly into the URL.

Here’s how it should look like if the output format is designated as PDF:

https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/apps/xxxxxxx-c4c4-4217-afd9-3920a0d1e2b0/rdlreports/b1d5e659-639e-41d0-b733-05d2bca9853c?rp:Salesperson=Tiggee&rdl:format=PDF

If you want to learn more about URL parameters and see more examples, be sure to check Microsoft’s official documentation page.

Latest Office build adds new features in Excel and PowerPoint

Microsoft has released a new Office build for for Insiders in the Fast Ring.

The new Office version 1909, build 12026.20000, brings a lot of fixes and improvements, but also some new features for Excel and PowerPoint.

You can now use XLOOKUP and save slides as SVG files

Excel gets a new XLOOKUP function that comes as an improvement for the older VLOOKUP. It has the ability too look vertically, but also horizontally, which means that it replaces HLOOKUP, as well.

With XLOOKUP you’ll only need three arguments: lookup_value, lookup_array, and return_array.

As for PowerPoint, from now on you’ll have the ability to save an illustration or a slide as SVG.

Because SVG is a vector-based image that does not use pixels to render and instead uses vectors, you’ll be able to save charts, shapes, icons, or slides as a scalable vector graphic (SVG) for a cleaner and sharper image.

New Office v1909 build 12026.20000 brings a lot of changes

  • We fixed an issue to remove non-functional ‘Planner’ link from the overflow menu in the contact card when working in environments where it is not available.

Access

  • We fixed an issue where users could receive an “inconsistent state” error when using a shared database.

It’s worth mentioning that OneNote and Visio didn’t get any new changes. Also, there are no known issues with any of the Office apps.

The update should roll out automatically, but you can also manually check for updates to see if you’re on the latest version.

High CPU usage on the latest KB4512941? Cortana is to blame

After a brief time in the Release Preview ring, Microsoft released Windows 10 v1903 build 18362.329 (KB4512941) to Windows 10 users as an optional update.

At the time of release, KB4512941 did not have any known issues, but it seems like after installing it, a lot of users experience high CPU usage even when the PC is idle.

Windows 10 v1903 build 18362.329 causes high CPU usage for many

The cause of the high CPU usage seems to be Cortana, and here’s how some Windows 10 users are describing the issue:

After installing the below updates (KB4512941), the CPU usage is high and remains high even when the machine is idle.

I got a similar problem after Windows 10 update and this was because of ” BingSearchEnabled” which was set to 0.

I just updated from 1809 to 1903 and had the exact symptoms that you described. It was driving me nuts.

And here’s the OPs screenshot: high cpu usage cortana Windows 10 v1903

The problem with SearchUI.exe is caused by a Cortana bug that pops up when users have disabled the ability to send local searches to Bing.

How can I fix high CPU usage on KB4512941?

If you’re experiencing high CPU usage in Task Manager because of the SearchUI.exe process, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a fix.

Just open the Registry Editor, navigate to

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search

, and set the BingSearchEnabled value to 1.

If you can’t edit your Windows 10’s registry, read this handy guide and find the quickest solutions to the issue.

Can’t access the Registry Editor? Things aren’t as scary as they seem. Check out this guide and solve the issue quickly.

After that, restart your PC and the problem should be solved. Keep in mind that this is only a temporary fix.

Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged the problem and we’ll probably have to wait sometime for an official fix. Until then, be sure to try the previously mentioned one to keep things in check.

Fix:2100 Detection Error on Storage Device (M.2)

You may get the 2100 detection error on the storage device M2 when trying to turn on your machine.

This is a common SSD error and can occur due to a faulty SSD or the improper installation of the drive in the M.2 slot.

Follow the steps below to fix it fast:

How can I fix the 2100 detection error on the storage device (M.2)?

1. Run Hardware Scan

  1. If you are using a Lenovo laptop, run a hardware scan to identify any issues with the SSD or any other system component.
  2. Launch the Lenovo Vantage software on your system.
  3. Click on Health and Support option.
  4. Scroll down and click on Run a Hardware Scan.SSD error 2100
  5. Click on the Run Quick Tests option.
    SSD error 2100
  6. Lenovo Vantage will execute the hardware scan. Wait for the test to conclude.
  7. On the result page, scroll down to the Storage section.
  8. If your SSD has passed the test with a green checkmark, then the issue is not with your SSD.
    SSD error 2100
  9. Check if any other major component has failed the test.

2. Check if the SSD is seated firmly

Another reason why the SSD error 2100 can occur is if the SSD wasn’t seated firmly in the M.2 slot. The SSD requires a screw to be seated firmly in the slot. However, the SSD manufacturers don’t offer any screw with the SSD.

If you haven’t properly screwed the SSD to the slot or if it wasn’t pushed down, the system may have difficulty accessing the drive resulting in this error. Make sure you open the back panel and remove the SSD.

Then reinsert the SSD into the slot and make sure it is properly placed and screwed. Restart the computer and check for any improvements.

3. Contact Support

If the SSD error 2100 started to occur after upgrading your Windows version or BIOS, contact Lenovo support or the SSD manufacturer if you installed the SSD.

The company should be able to replace the faulty drive with a new drive. You can also request data recovery in case your SSD is bricked and you cannot recover any data.

We can now conclude this detailed guide on how to fix the 2100 detection error on the storage device (M.2). The issue should now be gone for good, provided you follow our instructions.

Similarly, if SSD is showing RAW file system, check our detailed guide to fix it.
