VirtualBox is great if you want to run a virtual machine on your PC, but many users reported Raw-mode is unavailable courtesy of Hyper-V error in VirtualBox.

1. Turn off Core Isolation feature in Windows Defender

  1. Open the Settings app. You can do that quickly by using Windows Key + I shortcut.
  2. Navigate to the Update & Security section.
  3. In the left pane, select Windows Security. In the right pane, select Device security.

2. Disable Hypervisor

  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell as an administrator.

  4. If hypervisorlaunchtype is set to Auto, disable it by running the following command:
    • bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

  5. Restart your PC and check if the problem is resolved.

3. Make sure that Hyper-V is disabled

  1. Press Windows Key + R and enter optionalfeatures.exe. Press Enter or click OK.
  2. Windows Features window will now appear.
  3. Locate the Hyper-V on the list and disable it. Click OK to save changes.

4. Make sure that virtualization is enabled in BIOS

  2. Now look for Virtualization option and enable it.
  3. Save changes and restart your PC.

We all know by now the plans that Microsoft has for Windows 10 20H1 in terms of UI changes.

The overhauled Windows 10 UI to come in the Spring of 2020

With the accidentally leaked Windows 10 build 18947, a big part of the company’s changes to the Start Menu and Action Center were revealed.

If you like the new Microsoft will probably go with the new one and its Fluent Design elements.

Of course, the leaked version was in early stages, and you could expect many other changes to be implemented before its full release.

Just a month ago we showed you how Windows 10 could look like through the eyes of a concept designer, and now, another design of the Start Menu has surfaced up, this time by @Scoots37.

This new design is based on the leaked build and is very close to what Microsoft wants to implement.

As with the original leaked design, the concept has split the Windows community in two: users who love it and users who hate it.

Windows 10 ARM is almost ready to run on your Lumia 950

Earlier this year, a project to bring Windows on ARM to the Lumia 950 family was started by a group of dedicated developers.

The task of bringing the full version of Windows 10 designed for ARM chipsets to mobile phones that are supposed to run only on Windows 10 Mobile seemed almost impossible.

But with time and a lot of work, the team lead by Gustave Monce succeeded in adding more and more features and managed to make the majority of the phone’s sensors to work.

The new list of sensors that are working on Lumia 950 is almost complete.

Despite that, there are still things that don’t work properly, but the team said that all the functionality and fixes will be available in a future update:

Not too sure when we will release this yet, maybe in the middle of the month, maybe next month, I don’t want to make too many releases since we have no real update way

After things like Camera and the USB-C will be sorted out, the project will come to an end and you’ll be able to test it on your Lumia 950, if you so choose.

Finally, the re-built app navigation makes it easier to go through pages and items on mobile. There’s a new bottom navigation bar for that.

And also a new top bar that allows you to access the notification center and search for Power BI content.

If you’re interested in trying the new look of Power BI Mobile, you’ll have to manually opt-in by turning it on through the introduction banner, side panel, or app settings.

A significant number of Origin users have reported seeing an error whenever they tried logging into Origin Access.

This error appears even if the Internet connection is running correctly. Some users have said they can even download files from Origin but still can’t log into Origin Access.

At first glance, this issue seems to be caused by a server-side error, but our team has searched for the best troubleshooting methods for this situation. Read on to find out what the methods are.

What can I do to avoid an Origin Access error while signing in?

1. Run Origin with administrator privileges

To make sure that the issue appearing while singing into Origin Access is not caused by a lack of permission on Windows 10, it is recommended that you follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the location of your Origin launcher.
  2. Right-click it -> select Run as administrator.

Note: If you want to set these settings permanently, right-click the .exe file -> select Properties -> Compatibility tab -> tick the box Run this program as administrator -> click OK.

2. Make sure your system’s clock and date are correct

  1. Click Cortana -> type Control panel -> open it.
  2. Select the Clock, Language, and Region option -> Date and Time.
  3. Inside the Internet Time tab -> click on Change Settings.
  4. Make sure the Synchronize with an internet time server option is enabled.
  5. Click OK to close the time settings.

3. Deactivate any VPN software

Using VPN software when trying to connect to the Origin Access platform will cause an error to appear.

Please close any VPN software entirely and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Remove the Origin temporary file

  1. Right-click your taskbar -> click on Task Manager.
  2. Inside the Task Manager -> find Origin.exe and OriginWebHelperService.exe -> End task.
  3. Press Win+R keys on your keyboard -> type %ProgramData%/Origin -> Enter.
  4. Delete all the files and folders at that location but DO NOT delete the LocalContent folder.
  5. Open the Run dialog by pressing Win+R again -> type %AppData% -> hit Enter.
  6. Inside the folder -> delete the Origin folder.
  7. Click AppData the location link to open that folder -> open the Local folder -> delete Origin.
  8. Restart your computer and check to see if the issue persists.

5. Contact EA support to get help with the Origin Access error

Bing search box is back, this time on Windows 10 build 18970

Microsoft is not giving up on the Bing-powered search box in the Windows 10 lockscreen.

We’ve already reported a couple of months back that the tech giant is working on adding a new Bing search tool to the Windows 10 lockscreen with Windows 10 20H1 build 18932.

Now, the feature was spotted again in Windows 10 build 18970:

The Bing search box in the bottom left corner seems similar with the search box from the Taskbar and because of its positioning, the time and date have been move to the top left corner.

We don’t know very much about the new search box, as Microsoft didn’t shared any details about it.

The most interesting thing is if the search results will be displayed on the lock screen or you’ll have to login to see them. We’ll just have to wait and, hopefully soon, see how it works.

New Power BI update lets you add parameters to a URL

After receiving a new set of capacity settings to give more control to admins, Power BI‘s August update brought new features like grouping and Analytics.

Power BI gets URL parameters for Paginated Reports

Now, Microsoft has released a new update to introduce the support for URL parameters for paginated reports in the Power BI service.

In other words, report authors now have the ability to send commands to paginated reports in Power BI by just adding a parameter to a URL.

When you create a report parameter in Power BI Report Builder, you set a parameter name. If you want to use report parameters, you’ll have to add rp: in front of the parameter name for Power BI to recognize it in the URL.

For example, to set a report parameter in an URL, you’ll have to use rp:parameter=value.

Here’s how Christopher Finlan, Principal Program Manager for Power BI is describing the use of URL parameters:

So if I want to specify a value for the “Salesperson” parameter for my report in an app, I’d use the following URL: https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/apps/xxxxxxx-c4c4-4217-afd9-3920a0d1e2b0/rdlreports/b1d5e659-639e-41d0-b733-05d2bca9853c?rp:Salesperson=Tiggee

If “Salesperson” was instead a multi-value parameter that accepted multiple values, I can use an & to add an additional parameter value to my URL like so – https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/rdlreports/xxxxxxx-abc7-40f0-b456-febzf9cdda4d?rp:Salesperson=Tie+Bear&rp:Salesperson=Mickey

The new Generate Link feature easily integrates with URL parameters

Furthermore, Microsoft also announced the introduction of a new feature this week called Generate Link.

This feature aims to help with the discovery of the parameter names by generating a link of the current report with the parameter values appended to the URL.

Also, besides report parameters, you can set the export format of your report in the URL. Using the rdl: prefix will allow you to set the output format in which the report can be downloaded directly into the URL.

Here’s how it should look like if the output format is designated as PDF:

Microsoft has released a new Office build for for Insiders in the Fast Ring.

The new Office version 1909, build 12026.20000, brings a lot of fixes and improvements, but also some new features for Excel and PowerPoint.

You can now use XLOOKUP and save slides as SVG files

Excel gets a new XLOOKUP function that comes as an improvement for the older VLOOKUP. It has the ability too look vertically, but also horizontally, which means that it replaces HLOOKUP, as well.

With XLOOKUP you’ll only need three arguments: lookup_value, lookup_array, and return_array.

As for PowerPoint, from now on you’ll have the ability to save an illustration or a slide as SVG.

Because SVG is a vector-based image that does not use pixels to render and instead uses vectors, you’ll be able to save charts, shapes, icons, or slides as a scalable vector graphic (SVG) for a cleaner and sharper image.

  • We fixed an issue which prevented CSV from appearing as a supported file type

  • We fixed an issue where the function Frequency returns incorrect results.
  • We fixed an issue for Surface users where moving the mouse could be interpreted as a mouse click event.
  • We fixed an issue where the name of some fonts were not displayed correctly.
  • We have significantly improved the performance of filtering by color.
  • We fixed an issue which prevented keyboard navigation in the Find/Replace dialog box.
  • We fixed an issue where the keytip for Sensitivity was conflicting with another keytip.
  • We fixed an issue to prevent GeometryCommand from putting a non-connector shape type in the Geometry of a Connector.
  • We fixed an issue that caused a problem  when using dock/undock from multiple external displays.

  • We fixed an issue which would affect the rotation orientation of a 3D Turntable.

  • We fixed an issue where users could receive an “inconsistent state” error when using a shared database.
  • We fixed an issue which could cause the date picker to appear when it shouldn’t.

It’s worth mentioning that OneNote and Visio didn’t get any new changes. Also, there are no known issues with any of the Office apps.

High CPU usage on the latest KB4512941? Cortana is to blame

After a brief time in the Release Preview ring, Microsoft released Windows 10 v1903 build 18362.329 (KB4512941) to Windows 10 users as an optional update.

At the time of release, KB4512941 did not have any known issues, but it seems like after installing it, a lot of users experience high CPU usage even when the PC is idle.

The cause of the high CPU usage seems to be Cortana, and here’s how some Windows 10 users are describing the issue:

After installing the below updates (KB4512941), the CPU usage is high and remains high even when the machine is idle.

I got a similar problem after Windows 10 update and this was because of ” BingSearchEnabled” which was set to 0.

I just updated from 1809 to 1903 and had the exact symptoms that you described. It was driving me nuts.

The problem with SearchUI.exe is caused by a Cortana bug that pops up when users have disabled the ability to send local searches to Bing.

How can I fix high CPU usage on KB4512941?

If you’re experiencing high CPU usage in Task Manager because of the SearchUI.exe process, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a fix.

Just open the Registry Editor, navigate to

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search

, and set the BingSearchEnabled value to 1.

Windows Firewall is Blocking File Sharing: How to Allow it

File Sharing is an essential feature for users with multiple PCs in a Homegroup (Workgroup). Once it’s configured, the file exchange should work seamlessly. However, some users reported that Windows 10 Firewall is blocking File Sharing.

Ideally, after enabling File Sharing, your Windows Defender Firewall should allow the feature to communicate freely. But when problems appear, you need to allow file sharing in Windows Firewall manually. Keep reading to find out how!

1. Enable File and Printer Sharing

  1. In the Windows Search bar, type Sharing and open Manage advanced sharing settings.
  2. Under Network discovery, select Turn on network discovery.

How to see which apps are using your microphone in Windows 10

Windows 10’s May 2019 Update added a small but useful privacy feature. It’s now possible to see when apps are using your microphone, so you’re always informed when sound is being recorded.

You’ll see a microphone icon appear in the system tray once an app starts recording. It will remain present until all apps have finished recording. You can hover over the icon to see a tooltip with the name of the app.

To obtain an historical list of apps which have used your mic, open the Settings app. Click the Privacy category and then the “Microphone” page under “App permissions.”

The page is divided into two sections. First, you’ll see a list of all Microsoft Store apps which can access your microphone. You can use the toggle buttons to prevent individual apps from recording sound.

Below each app’s name, you’ll see the time when it last used your microphone. If no time is displayed, the app hasn’t recorded sound yet. Apps which are currently accessing your microphone will have “Currently in use” beneath their name in bright yellow text.

At the bottom of the page, there’s a separate section for desktop apps. Because desktop apps access your microphone through different methods, you can’t prevent them from using your device. You’ll only see a list of all apps which have recorded sound in the past. “Currently in use” will still display against apps which are recording now.

Because they’re not subject to the sandbox restrictions of Microsoft Store apps, a desktop program can directly interface with your microphone hardware. This means malicious software could record without Windows being aware, so it won’t show up in the list or display the microphone icon in the system tray.

Microsoft got a tangential win with the Pentagon recently where its contract partner General Dynamics convinced the United States Defense Department to use Microsoft’s 365 productivity software and solutions.

While not the $10 billion, multi-year white whale JEDI contract the company has been vying for, this new $7.6 billion agreement does put Microsoft and General Dynamics comfortably within the Department of Defenses’ zeitgeist.

Thanks to a rather obscured bidding platform called the GSA IT Schedule 70, the agency’s eBuy platform, this contract has been relatively shielded from the same sort of public scrutiny the DoD’s JEDI contract has undergone. Adding to the fact that Amazon oddly declined to bid for the contract, it appears it should have been a relatively easy sell for Microsoft’s contractors.

The new Defense Enterprise Office Solutions (DEOS) agreement would consist of GDIT, a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp. and its partners, Dell Marketing LP and Minburn Technology Group LLC splitting the duties of transitioning the DoD to Microsoft 365 powered cloud-based solutions over the next 10 years with a option for renewal baked in during the 5 year of the contract, according to reports from the Washington Business Journal and Bloomberg.

“DEOS will streamline our use of cloud email and collaborative tools while enhancing cybersecurity and information sharing based on standardized needs and market offerings,”  DOD Chief Information Officer Dana Deasy said in a statement.

More specifically, Microsoft 365 software and services will be dished out to over 3 million DoD employees and customers over the next 10 years. Brian Herman, an official with the Defense Information Systems Agency spoke with SiliconANGLE and explained that the department plans to migrate 1.5 million users to Microsoft’s productivity suite within the first 18 months of the contract which includes use of Office 365’s productivity suite, various messaging and chat services, content management tools, analytics software, collaboration interfaces and more.

According to Herman, the real heavy lifting will come from just moving personnel off the DoD’s aging custom Enterprise Email System and onto more modern communication tools.

Despite the odds weighing heavily in Amazon’s favor for awarding of the DoD’s JEDI contract, this recent DEOS agreement validates Microsoft’s commitment to security as requirements for the contract included a DoD Impact security Level 5 and 6 clearance, to which only Amazon and presumably Microsoft software have managed to pass.

Ideally, Microsoft could leverage the use of Microsoft 365 to revamp and produce an even more vertically integrated bid for the JEDI contract over the next few weeks while solicitations are on hold during its watchdog review.

 

Outlook.com is getting a new Groups feature

Microsoft has started rolling out a new Groups features in its Outlook.com webmail, which should be familiar for those of you already using Office 365 groups. By adding contacts to a group, you’ll be able to send them messages, share files, schedule events on a group calendar, and more, and it’s worth noting that you can add group members using other emails services than Outlook.com

This new feature is available in the left panel of the Outlook.com web app. If you’be been invited to different mutiple Outlook.com Groups, there’s also a “Follow in inbox” option which will send all group conversations and calendar events in both the group mailbox and your personal Outlook.com inbox.

We are rolling this out worldwide on Outlook.com and expect all users to have access by the end of August 2019 with expanded support to create a group in mobile in Fall of 2019, the company said yesterday in the blog post announcing the new feature. Lost Windows 10/11 after installing Ubuntu [FIX]

1. Make some changes in the GRUB loader

  1. Insert the installation disk to boot with Windows.
  2. Select Recovery, and then select Command Prompt.
  3. Type the following commands:
  • bootrec /FixMbr
  • bootrec /FixBoot
  • bootrec /ScanOs
  • bootrec /RebuildBcd

2. Set up partitions

If the method above didn’t work, try to set up your partitions. Open again the Command Prompt.

Enter the commands below. These command lines will select the first disk along with a list of all the partitions from this disk.

  • diskpart
  • sel disk 0
  • list vol
  1. Search the volume item with the Fs column FAT32 (you should format the EFI partition under FAT32).
  2. Type the command “sel vol x”, where “x” is the volume number of your EFI partition.
  3. Choose a letter for this partition. It is worth mentioning that this letter must be different from those already chosen for other partitions.
  4. Type this command to assign the letter: “assign letter=z:”
  5. After the success message appears, type “exit” to quit DiskPart.
  6. Type this command in Command Prompt: “cd /d z:EFIMicrosoftBoot“, where “z” is the letter for your new partition.
  7. Type the following command to repair the volume: “bootrec /fixboot”.
  8. Backup the old BCD with this command: “ren BCD BCD.backup”.
  9. Create a new BCD with the following command: “bcdboot c:\Windows /l en-us /s z: /f ALL”. Here, Windows is on “c:”. Replace if necessary.
  10. Reboot.
