How to use Microsoft OneNote in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a powerful collaboration service that rivals Slack. It can help bring your employees together from across your company or organization in a digital online space, but did you know Teams also has Microsoft OneNote built right in? That’s right, you can combine the power of Teams and OneNote to share important task lists, drawings, notes, and accomplish more across your organization.

Using OneNote within Teams is easy, and in the fast-paced world of Microsoft blogging, is something we leverage here at OnMSFT and use in our operations. Here’s more on how you can get started with OneNote in Teams.

How to add OneNote to a Microsoft Teams Channel

To get started with OneNote in Microsoft Teams, you will need to add it to one of your Teams general channels. You can do that by heading to the top bar (under where the name of your channel appears) and clicking the add a tab (+) button. Once that is done, you can choose OneNote from the list.

You’ll be presented with the option of opening an existing notebook (as we have in our list) or creating a new notebook from scratch. You also can click on “Paste a OneNote link” and add in the address, and then click “Save” if you want to link an existing notebook from elsewhere in your organization.

If you opt to create a new notebook, you can give it a name, and press save. Regardless, the notebook you opened or created should now show up on the top bar for easy access to all your employees within that Teams channel. If your employee or anyone in the channel is blocked from viewing the notebook, they’ll be able to request access right from the tab, allowing them to view and make edits.

So, how does OneNote in Teams work?

OneNote in Microsoft Teams uses the power of OneNote Online. In simpler terms, that means it works as a web interface, so, you’ll need to be connected to the internet to save all your work or any changes that you may make to notebooks. You’ll have access to some basic editing functionalities while using OneNote within Teams, and you’ll see the File, Home, Insert, Draw, and View tabs. You can still insert tables, files, pictures, and audio recordings, as well as draw certain items on your screen.

You also can press on the “Open in browser” button if you want to edit the Notebook using the OneNote app on your computer, but you’ll be prompted to sign in with your account. Here at OnMSFT, we use OneNote to keep a list of our editorial procedures for our day-to-day operations, making it easier to onboard new employees.

How to use a OneNote Class Notebook in Teams for Education

If you’re using Teams for Education, things are a bit different. Each team in Teams for Education comes with its own linked OneNote Class Notebook. These notebooks come with three components, a Student Notebook, Content Library, and Collaboration Space. The setup process is similar to what we described above, and you can navigate under the General channel of a classroom, and selecting the Class Notebook Tab. Microsoft dives deeper into the process here.

How will you succeed with Teams and OneNote?

So, there you have it! Using OneNote with Teams is as simple as adding it to a channel, and clicking on the add a tab button, and creating or opening a OneNote notebook. How to increase the Windows 10 notification timeout

Windows 10 displays notification banners for 5 seconds before moving them into Action Center. This might feel too quick and hurried, especially when you receive a text-heavy alert. It’s possible to change how long notifications stay on screen, giving you more time to read them before they vanish into Action Center.

As is often with the case with Windows 10, the setting for this isn’t necessarily where you’d expect it to be. There’s no reference to the option within the main “System > Notifications” settings screen. Instead, you’ll need to open the Settings app to the “Ease of Access” category – click its tile on the Settings homescreen.

Screenshot of changing Windows 10 notification timeout

You’ll now find the relevant control under the “Simplify and personalise Windows” heading. The “Show notifications for” dropdown gives you a variety of timeout options, ranging from the default of 5 seconds right up to 5 minutes.

There’s no way to enter your own value, so you’ll have to pick one of the six predefined delays. We suspect you’re unlikely to want notification toasts onscreen for longer than 30 seconds, but Microsoft makes it possible to use a very long timeout if you do require the option.

The change will take effect immediately after you select a new value in the dropdown. Subsequent notifications will stay onscreen for the selected duration, before getting moved into Action Center for you to review later on.

How to safely delete Windows Assembly Temp folder? [FULL GUIDE]

The Windows Assembly Temp folder is part of the GAC (Global Assembly Cache) tool that is used to install and uninstall assemblies by using Windows Uninstaller. This feature helps you uninstall and install assemblies in the testing process of installation packages and for servers. (tmp is used for installation, and Temp is used for uninstallation).

A wide range of people has reported having issues with the Temp folder found in Windows Assembly. They say that the automatic cleaning of the Temp folder never happens, so this results in the folder growing to the size of 20-30 GB.

For these reasons, in this article, we will discuss the possible reasons for which your computer doesn’t clean the Temp folders automatically, and also how to safely remove the data from the Temp folder.

How can I delete Windows Assembly Temp folder?

Why isn’t the Windows Assembly Temp folder cleaning itself automatically?

One of the possible reasons for which the Windows Assembly Temp folder isn’t getting cleaned automatically could be the incompatibility with another 3rd party software installed on your PC.

The issue seems to be caused by antivirus software that was found on all the computers that had this issue. This problem has been reproduced on clean installations of Windows Server, by simply installing the antivirus software called ‘G Data’.

This antivirus software seems to somehow block the automatic process of deleting temporary files stored on your PC for installing or uninstalling software. The symptoms have also been reproduced on Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows 2008 R2.

The user that found out about this software causing the issue, even got a confirmation from the developers of the G Data antivirus software, that they are aware of the issue and that they are working towards solving it.

How to remove the data from the Windows Assembly Temp folder?

Even though a permanent solution to this issue hasn’t been found yet, users have deleted the files stored in the Temp folders manually. They selected all the files stored inside this folder and used the Delete option to send them to the Recycle Bin.

Note: Some of the files stored in the Temp folder (c:>windows>assembly>temp folder) will not be able to be deleted as they are still in use by the operating system.

Users have not reported any sort of issues caused by deleting the contents of the folders manually, but it is strongly recommended to leave both ‘tmp’ and ‘temp’ folders untouched. The contents of these folders can be removed without issues.

In this article we found out what the ‘tmp’ and ‘temp’ folders from Windows Assembly are used for, and that it is safe to remove the contents of these folders, but not delete the actual folders.

To learn more about other temporary folders, check our SquirrelTemp folder guide.

The Sinking City: Is there a way to fix the most common bugs?

The Sinking City has already been out for a few days now, and a fair share of bugs have been reported by the gaming community already.

As mentioned in a previous article, the most common issues players have encountered in The Sinking City are as follows:

  1. Screen tearing
  2. Low FPS
  3. Textures appear and disappear randomly throughout the environment
  4. Lip-syncing is far too off the point
  5. NPCs are sometimes phasing through solid objects
  6. Long loading times that get longer as you progress in the game

Here’s what you can do to fix the issues listed above.

How to fix common The Sinking City on Xbox

1. Fix screen tearing issues

The only solution so far that was found for this issue was activating the Vertical-Sync feature from your Video Settings, as it is the go-to solution for all games when screen tearing is involved

2. Low FPS, textures appear and disappear

No current explanation or fix has been found for these issues, but they will most likely be solved by updating your Xbox’s firmware version, or in a future game patch.

3. Lip-syncing is far too off the point

Unfortunately, this bug is more of a game-related issue rather than something that is caused by your hardware. This means that the only way this issue may be fixed is also through future patching.

4. NPCs are sometimes phasing through solid objects

As with the previous bug, this seems to be a result of faulty game design, and as such can only be fixed in future patches.

5. Long loading times that get longer as you progress in the game

This is most likely caused by an inefficiency in the way data is managed within the game, and can only be solved by a major game patch.

As a general word of advice, try manually saving as often as possible. This is because of the general state of the game and the high amounts of reports of players that claimed they got stuck and couldn’t progress.

As such, in case you do end up stuck somewhere yourself, at least you’ll have a loading point close by.

As you can see, most of these issues can only be solved by the game developer. Hopefully, a major The Sinking City hotfix will land in the coming weeks.

Linux is more popular on Azure than Windows Server

It seems that to anybody’s surprise, Linux is now more used on Azure than Windows Server. Despite Microsoft winning the OS battle a long time ago, Linux found its spot on the server side of the computing world.

Although there’s no universal opinion, some users prefer Windows Server while others Linux. The mass transition to Linux is due to its simplicity and ease in use, as some users state:

Ten years ago, Linux and Windows were at their fiercest competition. In the end, Windows 10 won on desktop, and Linux won on server. […] Windows Server is altogether more clunky and less capable than, say, CentOS. I tried running Windows server on a VPS as an experiment and was blown away at how inefficient it was compared to most Linux distros I have tried. Granted it was a pretty low power VPS, but it would freeze up frequently when using RDP with anything remotely intensive. That’s not really acceptable to me when you can SSH into a terminal for next to 0 overhead and overall have a better, more familiar environment (at least for me).

But that’s just half of the story. When it comes to the business side of it, people are more interested in moving or running big workloads in Azure, and the OS preference comes second to that.

Moreover, the problem with Windows Server isn’t in the kernel itself, but in the bloatware that surrounds it, as another user confirms:

Microsoft is contributing some very interesting state of the art stuff to the Linux kernel. Actually, the Windows kernel is very good, it’s just everything around it is bloatware.

If there’s a race for the best OS to use on Azure between Linux and Windows Server, that is great news for Azure users. From the competition, or maybe collaboration, only the end user would win.

What do you think? Can we expect Microsoft and Linux devs to join forces in the near future for a better Azure experience?

Fai.music.metaservices is down for Windows 7 users [HERE’S WHY]

Many Windows 7 users reported that fai.music.metaservices.microsoft is not working on their machines.

As a quick reminder, back in January, Microsoft decided to discontinue support for Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center on Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 PCs.

This explains why many users are now experiencing this problem.

Microsoft says that users can’t view metadata such as title, genre, and artists for songs simply because the metadata hasn’t been updated:

Going forward, you may be unable to view information (metadata) such as the title, genre, and artist for songs, and the director, actors, and cover art for movies in Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player. […] Microsoft decided to discontinue this service. This means that new metadata won’t be updated on media players that are installed on your Windows device. However, any information that’s already been downloaded will still be available.

The good news is that, as Microsoft confirms, this change doesn’t affect the media player’s main functionalities such as playback, navigating collections, and media streaming. Only the features that require downloading new metadata are affected.

Is this a way to force users to update to Windows 10?

Microsoft announced that Windows 7 users would not be able to view metadata on Windows Media Player back in January.

The fact that these features became unavailable shortly after the May Update was rolled out made many users wonder if Microsoft did that on purpose so as to force them to upgrade to Windows 10.

As one user puts it:

This is just to push everyone to win10.
The service works only on win10 so this decision by microsoft falls in line with groove music and the only way to rip an audio cd is with wmp on win10 or add the information manually.
What will be next, not supporting lan, wifi, sound devices, video cards and other new hardware to force us to by only win10 certified devices from MC?

The rage over discontinuing fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com is understandable. Windows 7 is still a very popular operating system and limiting its features could mean what users say: forcing everyone to update to Windows 10.

There are ways to keep using your Windows 7 forever, but as you can see, this also depends on Microsoft’s decisions.

Office 365 Home vs Personal: Which plan is right for you?

If you’ve been thinking about subscribing to Office 365 to get access to the Microsoft Office suite of applications for an affordable yearly or monthly price, there are two options you can to choose from. Currently, for general consumers, Microsoft offers both Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal.

While both of these subscription tiers give you similar access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and Access, there are some subtle differences for what you can get for your money. In this guide, we dive a bit deeper and will help you choose the subscription plan that is right for your home.

So, what’s included in both subscriptions?

Before diving into the differences, it is best to look at the software and services you get with both subscriptions. Covered under Office 365 Home and Personal is access to full versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Skype. These all receive monthly updates from Microsoft, and you can install on PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones. If installing on just a PC, you’ll get bonus access to Microsoft Access and Publisher.

As a bonus, both subscriptions also include 1TB of cloud storage on Microsoft OneDrive per user (with paid options for more storage, if needed) and 60 minutes of calling on Skype per month. There are some exclusions and exceptions with who you can call on Skype, however. If you’re using OneNote, you will also gain access to some special features. These include Ink replay, Researcher, Math Assistant, Stickers, and more.

The Office 365 Icons

Office 365 Personal — For one person only

Now, it’s time to look at the differences. We’ll start first with Office 365 personal. For the price of $6.99 a month, or $69.99 a year, Office 365 Personal is the cheapest way to get Office on your devices. We’d recommend it if you’re  just buying a subscription for one person, with no plans to add users to your plan.

While the subscription does grant you access to PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Publisher, and Skype, there is an important limit.  If opting for this base plan, you only will be able to use the Office applications with one Microsoft account (meaning one user with one license) across multiple PCs, Macs, or tablets. You’ll also only get 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage with that single account.

Keep in mind, however, that while it may seem as though you may be able to install Office on as many computers as you want using this subscription, there are some technical limits. According to Microsoft, you only can stay signed in to Office 365 Personal with five devices at the same time. That means, that if you sign in to a sixth device, you’ll be forced to sign out of one of your other devices via the Microsoft Account page.

You might be able to install Office without signing in on that sixth device, but as Office 365 is activated using a Microsoft Account, you’ll also lose some subscription features and Office might only run in read-only mode.

Office 365 Home — For up to six people, best for families

Priced at $99.99 a year, or $9.99 a month, Office 365 Home is a subscription that we’d recommend for families. Compared to Office 365 Personal, for the extra $30, this version of Office 365 lets you pay one price to enjoy Office with multiple users, under one paid plan. There’s even a free 30-day trial available if you’re not sure if the subscription is right for you.

With this subscription, six different people can use PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Publisher, and Skype across multiple devices. In technical terms, this means you can link up to six Microsoft accounts with a single Office 365 Home subscription. Each person will be able to install Office on all their devices, with their own personal accounts, but only can stay signed in to five devices at the same time.

This means that each person will continue to get all the benefits, including full versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, plus the 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage and more. There’s plenty of value here for families, as adding things up across the six users, you can get up to 360 total minutes of Skype calls, and 6TB of storage on Microsoft OneDrive.

Office 365 Home in the Microsoft Store

For most, Office 365 Home and Personal is the way to go

At the end of the day, both Office 365 Home and Personal are excellent ways to save money and get Office for an affordable price. The alternative to these options would be to buy Office Home and Student 2019, which comes at a one-time cost of $149. However, by going that route, you’ll only be able to install Office on 1 PC or Mac, and you won’t have the ability to update to the next major version of Office for free when it’s available. You’ll own the software forever, and won’t have to worry about paying a yearly subscription fee, but you’ll end up paying more if you want to enjoy Office on multiple PCs or Macs with multiple users.

You can buy Office 365 Personal today from Microsoft by heading to this link here. Stay tuned for more as we continue to dive deeper into the world of Office 365.

Remedy regains control of Alan Wake from Microsoft, could be going multiplatform

Remedy Entertainment, the game developer behind Quantum Break, Max Payne, and Alan Wake is now in control of the publishing rights for the latter. In a message for investors (via Eurogamer), the Finnish company explained today that it would earn “approximately 2.5 million euros of royalties from previously released games” for its first half-year period of 2019, adding that “the publishing rights of Alan Wake games are reverted to Remedy.”

Alan Wake was initially released back in 2010 on Xbox 360, with Microsoft acting as a publisher. A Windows version was released two years later, and despite the game gaining cult following over the years, Remedy cancelled a sequel to work with Microsoft on Quantum Break.

Speaking with Eurogamer, a Remedy spokesperson explained that the game developer remains entirely focused on its next multiplatform game named Control, but owning the IP for Alan Wake means that releasing the game on more platforms is now a possibility.

“The only thing we want to clarify, now that Remedy owns the publishing rights, is that we could bring Alan Wake to different platforms if we so choose,” the Remedy spokesperson said. “We have nothing to announce for now. We are fully focused on Control releasing on 27th August.”

Alan Wake disappeared from the Xbox Store two years ago, but the PC version is still available on Steam and is 70% off during the Steam Summer sale.

5. Fix any connectivity issues between DHCP Server and domain controller

  1. Log into your DHCP server. Next, press Win + R keys to open the Run window.
  2. Enter cmd and press Enter.
  3. Inside the Command Prompt, type the following but be sure to replace server_FQDN with the full domain name of the domain controller: ping server_FQDNPinging server IP address in PowerShell - DHCP server keeps stopping

Follow these steps to ping the IP address of the domain controller:

  1. Inside the Command Prompt window enter the following but be sure to replace IP_address with the actual address of the domain controller:  ping IP_address
  2. Press Enter.
  3. You should now see the server response time.

If you successfully managed to ping the FQDN but not the domain controller IP address, this means that you might have a problem with the DNS host name resolution.

In case you can not ping the domain controller by IP address, this means that there are possible issues with your DHCP servers firewall configuration, network connectivity, or IPsec configuration.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only DHCP error, and many reported that users are unable to contact DHCP or that Windows is unable to get DHCP address. This isn’t just a Windows 10 issue, and many reported that DHCP isn’t working on Windows 11.

Follow these steps to enable rounded search corners in Windows 10 v1903

The preview builds of Windows 10 April 2018 Update introduced the immersive search bar feature for the first time. Microsoft is now improving the search experience in the form of a search app.

Starting with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft revamped the search experience. The Immersive search bar has been restyled and now sports rounded corners.

Many people don’t have any idea that this feature is disabled by default in Windows 10.

However, your device should be running Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019) in order to enable the hidden Immersive search bar.

This article lists some simple steps that you need to follow in order to get the new search experience ahead of its official release.

Before moving forward, it is recommended that you should back up your system. Remember, you can always use the backup to restore your system in case of any issues.

Steps to enable Immersive search with rounded corners in Windows 10

  1. Open Registry Editor and search for the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Searchwindows 10 current version registry editor
  2. Now at this step, you need to create a new DWORD 32-bit Value. Navigate to the right pane and follow these steps: Right-click >> New >> DWORD Value (32-Bit). Set the name as ImmersiveSearch.
  3. Double-click the newly created DWORD and set its value to 1.
  4. Navigate to the following location in the Registry Editor:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
    Windows\CurrentVersion\Search\Flighting
  5. Now right-click the Flighting folder and select New to create a subkey. Name the key “Override“. While creating new keys every time, you should make sure there are no blank spaces in the name of the key.
  6. In the end, select the new Override key and navigate to the right pane. Right-click and select New >> DWORD (32-bit) named “ImmersiveSearchFull“. Now change its default value to 1.
  7. Repeat the same process to create a new 32-bit DWORD named “CenterScreenRoundedCornerRadius“. Double-click CenterScreenRoundedCornerRadius to set its value to 9.

Finally, you should restart File Explorer from the Task Manager to activate the new feature.

Alternatively, you can also reboot your system. Once the reboot is done, you can navigate to the taskbar and click the search icon to activate search window.

If you observe closely, the new window does not include Cortana and features rounded corners.

It is worth mentioning that the UI makeover is a work in progress. Microsoft may take some time to completely make it available to production devices.

The functionality of the Uno Calculator is nothing different than the Windows 10 app. You can easily turn it into a Scientific calculator when needed.

Looking for an alternative calculator app? These are your best options in 2019.

The app can be used to convert different measurement units such as speed, energy, mass, weight, area, etc. You can select two dates to calculate the number of days between them.

Furthermore, the History feature displays the record of your past calculations. It also allows the users to convert currencies with a single click.

Windows 10 Calculator on Android

As far as the Android version is concerned, it sports an appealing user interface. You can find different calculator modes such as Scientific, Standard, and Programming mode hidden under the left menu option.

The currency conversion feature is also available in the Android version. Additionally, the developer also published a web version of Uno Calculator application.

This version eliminates the need to download the app and it can be accessed from your browser.

Download Android/iOS app

You can now visit the Google Play Store to download the app on your Android phone. The original version is published by the developer “nventive” and named as Uno Calculator.

Once you attempt to download the app, the system displays a warning about the unstable version.

However, the iPhone version of the app is currently in TestFlight. Therefore, you need to download the TestFlight on your phone to get the download link.

Windows 10 Twitter app could be getting cool color and font size options in a future update

A rather industrious Twitter user by the name of Jane Manchun Wong (via MSPU) has uncovered some new settings within the Twitter Progressive Web App (PWA) that add options for app text size, color theme, and brightness.

Interestingly, this is the first sign we’ve seen of colored themes beyond the Dark Mode variants on the Twitter apps. Judging by the icons underneath each color, these themes appear to be called Cherry Blossom (or Sakura), Avocado, Fire, Star, and Octopus.

These new settings are apparently being tested internally for now but the chances of them eventually rolling out to users is incredibly likely.

The Twitter PWA code is what’s used to run the web version of Twitter in addition to the official Windows 10 Twitter app so Windows 10 users will be able to get their hands on these options one way or another.

The Twitter PWA updated last week with a significant menu design refresh.
